  1. I forgot to mention that I was able to get the radio for $87.
  2. I have both Ham and GMRS Licenses, and find my experience on Repeaters to be very similar. Both services host Nets a few times per week. Both services have regular Emergency Comms nets and training. The larger repeaters in my area provide traffic and weather updates from a control operator morning and evening. Some people are talkers, but many are primarily listeners. Find all of the repeaters in your area and load up your memory channels. Use Scan a lot. You will get a feel for what is happening in your area. Don’t forget to scan the simplex channels as well. Relax and enjoy.
  3. Make sure you get some space between the radios when testing.
  4. GMRS radios do not seem to be overly sensitive to noise. Trucks and their systems have evolved over time as well. Most go straight to the battery for the high power needs of the 50w mobiles. My 20w mobile plugs into the 12v port and has no issues.
  5. I sent you a private message.
  6. I ordered this radio after a search for a 15-20 watt mobile that I could move between my Jeep and my office. I wanted a unit that would work from a 12v outlet in the car, and also plug into my 5A lab power supply. PROS Very small Great speaker Bright color display CONS No Chirp programming, must use app from Radioddity Closer to 15 watts than 20 watts on most frequencies I will provide further feedback after I have had the chance to use it some.
  7. A Foreign National can get an FRN Number, FCC CORES account, and a GMRS License. They may not be a representative of their Government, and must be at least 18 years old.
  8. Just edit your profile page. It will let you update callsign as long as it has made it into the database.
  9. I was referring to the original poster of the thread.
  10. Now the poor guy has gone running for the hills, and left his radios behind. It’s like the Hatfields and McCoys sometimes.
  11. Welcome Vince. UHF is a lot of fun.
  12. Yes, as of March 2023. Based on that date I assume Gen 1 versions of this radio were not Part 95 certified.
  13. Picked up the TD-H8 in GMRS configuration from Amazon last week. Does a great job for GMRS. I decided to unlock it for testing on HAM and MURS. I was fairly impressed with overall performance. I programmed with Bluetooth and Chirp. My main reasoning for the test was to have a spare radio that could be reconfigured on the fly if ever I have issues with my HAM HT. That said, the H8 default configuration will be as a channelized GMRS Radio. The ODMaster Bluetooth application does a great job, and covers all of the special function button programming as well. Overall good value for money.
  14. Post deleted and put in the correct sub-forum.
  15. As a dual Licensee, I can only say that the Technician License opens up a whole world of interesting possibilities to experiment with Linking, Digital Communications and the like as long as you are operating above 50 mHz. If that is not something interesting or compelling, no problem. Some may have equipment that can be reconfigured to support HAM+GMRS+MURS, especially those that are new to GMRS and bought Radio On A Chip based hardware. As an aside, I have been a HAM since 1988, and added a GMRS License to communicate with family and traveling companions only recently.
