  1. I was talking with someone on a GMRS repeater a bit ago and they said my call sign would probably be kilo something.
  2. Thank you!
  3. I just passed the exam this morning and should have my call sign next week they said. I was the only one there to be tested. If you could buy the A3 again would you. I was thinking about ordering one.
  4. Lol, this is good.
  5. Navigating the FCC website just to pay the whatever small dollars to get the GMRS license is not that hard for several people to do and it’s probably harder than the technician ham test on a first try to be honest. This a perfect use case in my opinion. No need for further research, an immediate solution is present in FRS with some planning and just a step further your worries about license are solved.
  6. Just to run the question back, you are asking about security communications at a place of worship right? You could get basic duel band monitoring hand held’s with 2 dedicated net controllers communicating with different input and output frequencies assigned to them and then structure communication so that the security team or teams communicate with pre determined frequencies to the controllers who can then coordinate security assets in real time. Unless this is a 24/7 megachurch with concerns then you could go with just the one net controller and a team or two with the same concept at a smaller scale. I am new to this as well and could be completely wrong but this is what I suspect brother, for whatever it’s worth.
  7. From what I can tell the GMRS frequencies are hardly even in use at all. I would just get the radios you want and set them to the shared FRS frequencies.
  8. If I could also reach out and ask about grounding while using an outdoor battery powered setup (aside from “look up”) and ask what is the basic common sense, consensus beyond local electrical codes for a setup of any kind. I once saw a clear day while fishing with a completely clear sky and then a violent bolt of lighting from the east accompanied by dark clouds moving quickly towards me. I put my pole down and went home. While operating mobile what else is there to know in addition to this kind of hazard?
  9. Nice!, I’m taking my test this Saturday and should have my call sign by next week. I was just looking at the A3. If I could ask you some advice on getting a 10m setup I would appreciate it. I want to be able to pack up and then set up outdoors away from an outlet. Is this done with “plug and play” type stuff to external battery or does it need to be DIY manufactured? I got into this about a month ago and getting close to internet research fatigue. I have a role up slim jim on order for testing simplex distance VHF/UHF on hills/mountains.
  10. Same here on the convenience, especially for trying to figure the basic things out before spending more money. I live in a flat roof 2 story townhouse with a thin metal covering, I’m tempted now to put the mobile mag on the roof to test it.
  11. Tip a to the old school. This is exactly what got my interest.
  12. Good luck tomorrow on the test brother. I’m an inspirational Luddite at the end of the day and will most likely get a laptop after I figure out the traditional old school anolog.
  13. Nice!, I look forward to the do it yourself aspect of all of this.
  14. Thanks for the info. With the cheap handheld I can hear many repeaters in my area but I definitely want to see what I can do without the repeaters once I’m cleared to transmit. I was gonna do an online test but found out that I needed a real PC or laptop which I don’t have a need for so I gotta wait another week for a local in person test. I would rather spend the money on radio equipment.
