  1. This happens with my same radio as well, but only when I'm in my office and surrounded by a bunch of computers, screens, and other electrical devices. I figure it's just interference from them. As soon as I leave the office, every thing works perfectly again.
  2. Following along with this thread as I'm also in WA, outside of Tacoma, in Orting.
  3. Here are some photos. The main unit is under the passenger seat with the face unit velcro to the phone charging cubby. I can still slip my phone back there to charge easy enough. The hand mic is the only thing that got screwed in. Although, it’s not the best position since I’ve been bumping it with my knee. Luckily it has a quick to use lock switch on it. The magnetic antenna base is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. A bit of an eyesore but it is what it is. I went out with it this morning but couldn’t reach anyone on the local repeater. 10 minutes before that I was loud and clear on my HT. So I’m not sure what the problem is with it. The wire is crimped a bit from where the hatch closes in on it, would that be an issue? I wanted to test it out some more but my dogs were going crazy barking so I just headed home after three attempts at reaching someone.
  4. I purchased the KG-1000G a while back, but never got around to setting it up or installing it. I didn't feel comfortable running the wires and whatnot. So I found a place that will do it for me in the next few days. And no, it wasn't cheap. But I don't care. This will be my first mobile radio, so I'm excited. I'm currently using two of the KG-935Gs and I like them a lot. They're able to hit my local repeater about 30 miles away, which is pretty awesome, but I can't reach any other repeaters. Hopefully this new mobile unit will help out. That's all I have to share. I didn't really have anyone else to share it with. This stuff is super neat to me for some reason, so I spend money on it without any real world use for it and without any people I know IRL that's also into it. I suppose I need to start making friends through the repeater soon.
  5. A lot of excellent information there, thanks!
  6. I just came across this thread and find this mobile repeater to be really interesting. I'm still a newb at all of this, but I may go ahead and buy the Retevis kit just to set up at the house as a trial run before doing a proper repeater. If I buy the kit, I still need to buy an antenna and some cable, correct? And that should be it? I'm thinking of placing the antenna in my attic. Would that be fine, or does it make that big of a difference by placing it outside on the roof?
  7. I've figured out what each of them does, I'm now curious what they stand for.
  8. At times I use the radios to communicate around the house. I’d like to do that without having to use my call sign if that’s possible. Channels 8-14 are set to low power, would those be the ones I should use?
  9. I appreciate the reply but I don't understand what you're trying to say.
  10. I'm trying to access this repeater: https://mygmrs.com/view?id=3641 I have the B-Tech GMRS-V1 and do the following: Turn to channel 26, which is the repeater channel for 18. 462.625. I input 141.3 under both R-CTCS and R-CTCS. I verify SFT-D is set to plus +. I try to key up but can't hear anything on my other radio. I do hear all day long many others talking on this channel. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
  11. When I tune into channel 04 (462.6375) I can communicate to my other radio which is on channel 19 (462.650). I don't understand, is this normal?
  12. When I look at the repeater directory it shows 41 repeaters in Washington state. But when I look at the map it shows only about 10.
  13. Looks like I'm a couple of miles outside of the nearest repeater's coverage map. This is the one: https://mygmrs.com/view?id=3521 I have a few more questions: The output is listed as 462.725 Mhz. Looking at my frequency reference chart, this would be GMRS channel 22, correct? If this is channel 22, and all I wanted to do was listen, I would only have to switch to channel 22 and do nothing else? For travel tone (PL tone?) it says "No". This means no tone is needed, correct? But even if there was a PL tone, as long as I have no tone set on my radio, I should still be able to hear everything?
  14. Thanks for the info. I just tested all repeater channels but nothing came back, so I guess there are no repeaters near me. Although, maybe I needed to use PL tones? I took radio 1 and set it to REPT15. Radio 2 set to GMRS15. I used radio 1 to transmit a radio check through and received nothing on radio 2. I did that with all the repeater channels and received nothing on any of them. Just want to make sure I was testing this the correct way? CTCSS was off on both radios for every channel.
  15. I'm new and still learning everything. If I tune into the REPT15 channel on both radios, why does nothing happen when I key up with both radios next to each other? Now, I understand I should stick with the regular channels for close communications. I'm just experimenting here and trying to learn why, and why not, certain things work. Do these channels only work if they actually travel through a repeater?
  16. I ordered BTECH GMRS-V1 from Amazon. I also received my license yesterday. I do a lot of hiking and camping. But I'm also interested and learning much more about GMRS and radios in general. I know these can be programmed and use other antenna, but I held off on ordering those and the cable until I understand more of the basics. Any tips, suggestions, ideas for a total newb will be greatly appreciated! Radios and/or transmission etiquette, or anything else. Thanks!
