  1. Knowing what I know now, if I were considering the mxt400, I would hold off til Midland gets the split tone issues sorted (doesn't let you set send and receive codes separately). Initial impression is the "finish" of the btech isn't with Midland, but it seems to make up for it on the features side.

(For reference, I'm still newish to all this, and I have a mix of radios; Midland handhelds, a kg805g wouxun, and a Midland mxt115 mobile, with the btech the most recent add)

Be interested in your long term opinion of the btech.

  2. I found it easier to program all functions of the 805G via control panel.  To my knowledge, DTMF is not available on the 805 and is not mentioned in the instruction sheet.  I see no mention of 'step' or 'side tone' either so those must be in the software only.  Guess I could plug in and play with the software..

Definitely in the software. some extra features and setting in there.

  3. I have a KG-UDV1P, and if it is similar, then side tone is whether or not you hear the DTMF tone come back out from the speaker when you are transmitting them.

For FRS/GMRS use, you can set your step to 12.5 KHz.  If you want to program and llisten to some commercial frequencies, you may need to set this to 6.25 KHz.  The step is simply the amount of jump between clicks on your up and down buttons, or channel knob.  At 12.5, every click will go up one channel.  If you set it to 25, then every click will go up 2 channels, and you will miss the in-between ones.

Thankyou. I'll stick with the 12.5 Khz for now. Now I have to learn about DTMF tones.

  4. So I'm totally new to dedicated gmrs. I have a wouxun kg-805g and am trying to program via PC. I think I have my repeaters programed by time will tell.

Question 1. What is step and what should I be setting it to?

Question 2. What is side tone?

  5. I just picked up a pair of the kg-805g. Feels like a durable unit. Have heard some chatter in the repeater channels from some considerable distances. I'm totally new so I don't know how to program my radio's for repeater use, but give me time I'll learn. FM radio is a plus.
