  1. On my Baofeng UV82 I had to turn off the 2 squelch tail eliminator settings to prevent tx to rx delay when I transmit into my repeater or on simplex. Mine would delay serveral seconds depending on the setting. The squelch tail eliminator on these china made radios don't work on the USA analog PL tone standard.

    What settings did you change?

  2. Today, with my new Jpole antenna heard a GMRS repeater here on the ES. I couldn't key it up, but was able to hear them talking loud and clear. Although I didn't hear any call signs. I heard "I'm just turning on 404" Which is a small highway near me. I was able to key it up for a very small second, I heard him say "I think I hear someone else keying up the repeater. It's on 625 with no PL is anyone is interested. No idea the exact location.

  3. Hi. I am new here too. I have a Motorola MR350R. It does have GMRS. But, can I use it with repeaters? I have a repeater in my area which has Output freq 462.675MHz and input freq 467.675MHz. What is the third frequency that says 141.3Hz on the repeater? Can someone explain?

No, the MR350R doesn't support repeaters. The MS350's do. They are only $80, float and are waterproof.

  4. When I was searching for a second Baofeng, I came across the UV-B5. What caught my eye first was the manual tuning knob at the top of the radio, a great replacement to the flashlight that I think is a good feature but never end up using.

When I opened up the box and picked up the radio, It felt miles better than the oversize Tylenol shape of the UV-5R. The only issue with build quality is that the belt clip screws are too short. That was easily fixed by swapping the screws with the UV-5R.

On the left side of the radio, there are three keys. The PTT button, and the monitor/backlight button. The third is for activating the flashlight on the UV-B6.  On the right there are the 3.5mm microphone jack and 2.5mm speaker jack. On the top is the dial for tuning the radio. It makes changing menu options miles faster and easier than every other Baofeng.

The battery is 2000MAH and lasts just about as long as my UV-5R. The stock antenna does a very good job, surprisingly. A Nagoya NA-771 made little difference talking on distant repeaters. The manual is also quite good and easy(ish) to understand.

This radio's transmitter is advertised at 5 watts, but according to my power meter it is as follows.

    VHF 146.520: 4.3 watts

    UHF 462.600: 3.8 watts

This is almost the same as my UV-5R. Nothing special here.

Now the Receiver is where this radio kills every other Baofeng. The receiver does get overloaded, but it's quite hard to overload it. The squelch also actually works on VHF, unlike the UV-5R.

The UV-B5, in my opinion is the best Beofeng. I bought mine for only $25 brand new. The value is great and the radio is almost perfect aside from a few flaws.

  5. I have been listening to GMRS around the Baltimore/DC area and I rarely hear any traffic. The machines are still there but there's no action. I hear a machine to the south from time to time and another one in OCMD. Both of those have some traffic on them.

I went up there today. I also heard little to no traffic. I didn't make one contact. Only heard one repeater I think and I couldn't key it up.

  6. Hello all, new member and GMRS licensee. Happy to join this group.

@mellowcream, I live in Frederick, MD and do visit Easton regularly, and probably for the upcoming waterfowl festival. I'm new at this but trying to set up a way to communicate with my dispersed family members in case of emergency.

My neighbor (Ham) has a GMRS repeater but, as with the other two mentioned above, seems it's not powered up. I will contact him this afternoon and verify.  It's Frederick 610  https://www.mygmrs.com/view?id=1359

    Sorry for the late reply!

    How is this project going?

  7. Hello,

My friend Jacob is just getting in to radios and such things. I recommended a GMRS radio as his first radio. He want's something for around $100 that will preform good. We live 2 miles apart in with a bit of obstructions, do you think with this: http://www.amazon.com/Midland-GXT5000-36-Mile-22-Channel-Two-Way/dp/B004TS1J4A/ we could talk to each-other?  I recommended the Baofeng UV-5R v2+, but he said he didn't want to have to learn to program it. What other good GMRS HT's are there? I only have experience the MS-350's and I don't like the battery life or look.

  8. Glad you guys enjoyed the QSO last night.  Basically what happened is we were repeater skipping.  You were listening on simplex but talking through your Philly repeater, which myself and Kevin (a member of my repeater group) were able to pick up.  In return we were were talking through our repeater group WB725NY to you and hearing your repeater on simplex.    If that makes sense, It was fun and maybe something we could try again.  I am not sure if it was weather or just how out systems are alligned but according to Google the systems are about 126 miles apart as the crow flies, the majority of that being over the water.   It was fun and great to talk to some of the group from other states.

BTW, the PL's for our machines do not match, no security issue for me.

    This isn't my repeater.

But that does make more sense. I'm still curious how I hit the Philly repeater with an HT. Must have been perfect conditions

  9. In Post # 1 in this thread, an access code was mentioned in the open.  For owner security reasons, CTCSS and digital access codes should not be placed in the open forum.  If someone wishes to share that info with specific members, please do so by way of Private Messaging where search engine 'bots' can not see the info. Thank you.

Kevin, thanks for registering here at MyGMRS Forums.  Nice to have you with us.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't realize that. Unlicensed users could cause trouble.

  10. If you own that repeater, definitely get it listed.

I have a Ritron that was converted from public service and programmed for GMRS.

I have hit repeaters 25 miles away w/ the baofeng on 2m using the Ed Fong (25' up)

I am about 13' above sea level here on LI

Not sure about he elevation of the repeater in Philly but it must be 'up there' ...

    Nice,

I don't own that repeater. So I think we should contact the owner to see if he wants it listed.

This is the antenna you have, right? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dual-Band-VHF-UHF-Base-Antenna-Ham-Commercial-MURS-GMRS-FRS-DBJ-1-/111415925312?pt=US_Radio_Comm_Antennas&hash=item19f0e81a40

  11. I was on an hour before Bill came on. I heard you in my backyard on my baofeng w/ a Nagoya 771

I hopped in the mobile to reach you as my mobile has more power to the repeater.

I later heard you on my base- on the roof I have an " ed fong /ebay" antenna - your signal was 5ish and strong.

That antenna is great with a baofeng btw.. 30.00!

    73

Do you think we should make a listing for the it on the repeater database on here?

    The Nagoya 771s are amazing.

What unit do you use for your base?
