  1. Pete and Fred had not seen each other in many years. Now they had a long talk trying to fill in the gap of those years by telling about their lives. Finally Pete invited Fred to visit him in his new apartment. "I have a wife and three kids and I'd love to have you visit us."

    "Great. Where do you live?"

"Here's the address. And there's plenty of parking behind the apartment. Park and come around to the front door, kick it open with your foot, go to the elevator and press the button with your left elbow, then enter! When you reach the sixth floor, go down the hall until you see my name on the door. Then press the doorbell with your right elbow and I'll let you in."

"Good. But tell me...what is all this business of kicking the front door open, then pressing elevator buttons with my right, then my left elbow?"

Pete Answered, "Surely, you're not coming empty-handed."

  2. As most of us have experienced recently, we have a slow-down in the server that is hosting this Forum. The server, as I understand it, is owned by Rich D., and he has been contacted about the situation.  There is also a situation where a member attempts to log out and the software just sits there for many seconds.  Rich was made aware of that situation as well.

Until things are resolved, make the best of it and thanks for your understanding.

  3. Dan - ;)

We enjoyed your role as LT. DAN in the movie "Forrest Gump"... we see that you have been promoted since then to CaptDan... :D

P/S - Gary Sinise, who actually played Lt. Dan in the 1994 movie as well as having a major role in 'CSI New York', is  a fine bass guitar player and tours with "The Lt. Dan Band".   He and I share a commonality - we both play bass guitar and we both have owned Fender and Cort basses.

Now, if there was just some way to attach a mobile GMRS antenna to a Fender Jazz Bass, I'd have it made.

  4. Dan - Thanks for the feedback.  Rich is aware of the fact that the forum needs a little fine tuning, yet, and he does that when he can... however, as I understand it, he is working over 60 hours a week and things like this may take some time.

For the time being, please bookmark the main site in your bookmarks or favorites file and hit that in your browser if you have to go back or simply open another tab and be in both places at once.

  5. Since the version of IP Board software that runs this forum is a little "new" to everyone, I'd just like to take a moment to post a reminder:

When you log in, please view the "Letter" and "Like" ICONS in the upper right portion of the main screen - just to the left of your username.  If there is a number next to either of those ICONS, that means that you either have a new message waiting in your forum message inbox or that someone liked a post that you placed in the forum.

Those small numbers are very easy to overlook, so please check those ICONS at login so you don't miss any messages or updates.

    Thank you.

  6. Hello, Gene, and Welcome to the Forum.

Many FCC initiated inquiries for public feedback have not been heard from since the closure dates for feedback.

Budget cuts and now the sequester has most likely put many agency projects on hold.

What I can say is this... the reason that my family does not live at The Villages in central Florida is their complete lack of respect for ANY radio operators and the fact that almost all petitions from established residents to put up antennas, towers or any hardware related to radio systems is disallowed.  Their line is that "we must maintain a 'certain look and ambience' to our community".   I wonder if they would complain that when a fire breaks out in their 'community' that the fire department and police are dispatched from a TOWER that saves lives.  So it is with commercial two way and amateur systems in Tropical Storm and Hurricane situations, but they are hard hearted against these first responders over the airwaves.

The FCC intent was to potentially slap HOA's with discrimination actions on behalf of a class of citizens, and lawyers would have had a field day in civil court getting relief for their clients. We haven't heard anything and may not for some time...until government gets smaller and agency funding in appropriate levels is back in place.

I have heard that amateur operators are installing shared towers OUTSIDE the HOA jurisdictions and using window mount hidden antennas to access the repeaters.  SHHHH....don't tell anyone....

  7. To the best of my knowledge, the reasons for NOT running long lengths of feedline inside mast or conduit are more mechanical than electrical.  You can not easilly support the weight of the feedline while it is INSIDE a mast pipe. It is best to run it along the outside of the mast. Wrap three layers of high quality electrical tape around the outside of the feedline at 3 foot intervals and THEN use a UV-proof plastic wire tie around the tape and mast to secure the feedline. You can also use a little more tape to cover the wire tie around the mast and feedline for additional secure anti-slip protection.

Where the feedline would enter and exit a mast pipe, there are sharp edges that if not addressed, can cut into the feedline allowing water in or in a worst case scenario, short the shield to the center conductor. A feedline on a sharp angle coming out of or into a mast can compromise the integrity of the feedline outer layer in a matter of weeks.

Finally, if you use a feedline with marginal internal (cheap) shielding, and run the feedline inside a mast, that mast will act as shielding itself as well and will un-balance the feedline regarding SWR inside verses outside the mast.  This will not be an issue with Andrew Hardline, Belden RG213 or LMR400 but it is still best not to run the line inside a pipe.

  8. Dan - Thanks for posting here in the Forum and Welcome...

We'll have to wait for persons with ICOM experience to chime in on your question.  There are no ICOM dealers in either of my primary residential locations, so I personally have no experience with them at all. Our Forum traffic is a little less on weekends, so be patient and someone with that info will reply to your questions as their time permits...

  9. Jay - I'm sending you a private message to your Forum inbox regarding the owner of that system. Please check your new message.

That system is not registered either at LAGGROUP or at MyGMRS.com ,  so it is most likely a PRIVATE repeater. Until such time as you contact the owner and obtain permission in writing to use it, it may be wise to not attempt access.

  10. Ron - Are you referring to the main MyGMRS.com info site?

Unfortunately, there is no way for a Forum moderator to do anything at the main site - we do not have any access any more than you do.

Rich is working many hours each day at his job(s) and all I can say is to continue to send him a new message every couple of days through the CONTACT button at the top right of the screen  -

    OR

You can click on Rich's name at the bottom of the main page and then hit the CONTACT button by his photo - that may expedite things.

  11. Hello, Cody, and Welcome to the Forum...

I was in contact with the Administrator at LAG recently and he has exhausted every possible avenue to de-bug the software and to get back in himself as the sole administrator.  At the moment, even if you can log in to the Member-Only repeater list and personnel roster, the software will not display any repeater access info because that part of the main site software is inoperable as well.

On a case by case basis, let me know which system in Wisconsin that you wish to get permission to use and I can TRY to at least get repeater owner contact information for you in a private message back to you. I don't provide that info in the open because spybots from many seach engines 'camp out' here and I don't want any personal or system information to be gathered and placed on Google, Ask, Bing or others.

Please PM me with your request and I'll see if the 2010 owner's roster (most recent) has what you are looking for on hard copy.

  12. That's one that John may be able to help with.

A quick check of the MyGMRS registry shows one system on 462.675 in Monroe Township N.J. as well as New York

systems in Hamburg, Lancaster, Northville and Springville, but there are many systems that are not registered (yet) at MyGMRS.

If it is an unlicensed system, the owner may not wish to report unlawful access to the Field Office because he, himself, may be in violation of section 47CFR95.3

    ???

  13. One of my endeavours lately is to unload any piece of electronic equipment that I will no longer need because soon, it will not be legal to place any electronics of any kind in the general trash. It must be taken to the contract recycling center to be dismantled and recycled as much as possible and there is a charge for that service that taxpayers will have to pay or be fined.

With that in mind, I "swapped" numerous 1960's to 1970's crystal type Bearcat I through IV scanners and some older wideband programmable Radio Shack and Regency scanners for an Astatic D-104 mic.  Don't know the model number for certain on this D-104, but it is a standard, amplified, grab bar style with a grey base. (It is probably a T-UG-8).  This mic is from roughly 1974 to 1977 and has no pitting on the switch contacts, no scratches and no cosmetic issues that I can see other than the 8 screws holding the mic head together are bronze rather than nickel plated - the plating has worn off.  The mic has great audio range and is wired for standard 4-pin Cobra CB configuration. I am not a 'ham' but I know that this type of mic is favored by some  amateur operators for sideband operations.

I think that I came out ahead on this deal... however, I have never seen a D-104 up close and never owned one until today. Is there anything that I should know about these from your experience?  It will only be on display in my communications museum and will get very little use, if at all.  Thanks...

  14. I was wondering the same thing on this.  Been almost a year since I've applied to that group with no word back.  Was wanting to get access to Chicago 1 and 2.

Dan - I'm sending you a private message with Chicago system contact info from the 2010 LAG roster (the most recent). This may no longer be accurate, but it is all that is available.  Please check your private messaging inbox here in the forum.

To all   MyGMRS members ....  due to the severe software issues at the LAGGROUP forum, please do not rely on any messaging contact there for the time being.  The current administrator tried to repair the software and he, himself, got locked out by the bad software error and can not get back in.  That forum is a 'dead zone' at this time, but  IF I hear anything new,  I'll place a new post in this thread with details.

P/S to Dan - dr4710 ... kinda cool to have an entire expressway named after you !!!  :D

  15. Speaking of combo radios -

I just picked up a Cobra PR-950DX in excellent condition at a garage sale.  No corrosion in the battery compartment, no scratches on the case and the belt clip is still there. It even had the original owner's manual.  Two watt output on the GMRS frequncies and I tested it in an urban area and got 2.7 miles to a Kenwood 4 watt portable.  CTCSS codes are accurate and frequency stability seems to be right on the money according to my UHF frequency counter.  I know what you are wondering... how much was it?  --- How does $ 2.00  sound?  :D
