I have the same radio. I too had issues such as yours. Solution. Turn off the PL or DPL on RX. Not all repeaters choose to transmit a PL/DPL. Needing one to get in is almost a given. However, the outputs do not always repeat the tone. To make matters worse, most repeater listings are not kept up to date. So even though it says it is supposed to be TXing a tone, it may not. Radio is fine. You just have to go check repeaters in VFO mode manually to verify weather or not they are indeed TXing the tone before adding it to Channel mode.

I'll have to look and see if I can find the notes we had on a Plectron toner for one of our VFD's.
it was an old 70's vintage plectron wired through the MRTI I think on an MTR 2000.
getting the audio is the easy part, making PTT no too hard either, it where to put it.

mainehazmt reacted to zap in The FCC has *denied* petition to allow Non certified equipment on GMRS
Where they went wrong in their petition was bringing up amateur transceivers. Any commercially marketed amateur transmitter (in the US) has to be type certified for operation in Part 97 and the receivers have to be at least Part 15. However, being amateur radio, any home brew or "modified" (this includes Part 90 gear running in ham land) equipment just needs to meet the technical standards of Part 97. Most of the current petitions out there (or most recent) are from hams who won't suck it up and get a radio without VFO. There is tons of surplus Part 90 (and 95) equipment out there that simply did not meet narrow banding. Ham's either A) trying to petition the FCC to allow Part 97 equipment or trying to petition the FCC to allow hams to use GMRS without applying for the licensing and using equipment that meets or exceeds the technical specs won't get anywhere.

Also if you look into the emergency side of the statement, you'll realize that many of the guys who are a part of RACES/ARES and utilize GMRS also hang up their Part 97 FM transceivers in an emergency in favor of Part 90 FM transceivers because they are more or less idiot proof, much more rugged, and allow for easier interoperability between all emergency personnel.

mainehazmt reacted to Steve in tip for programming older radios with newer computers using a VM
so i got a trial version of VMware workstation (free vmware player might also work) and found a vm of Windows95 from the link below.   So you can run win95 inside the VM on ANY machine, I'm using Win7 64bit.  I loaded some programming software that is only 16bit and wont run on anything newer than 95/98. I mapped the com ports on the host PC and the VMware software, i enabled com ports and then went into the win95 vm and ran the "software" and told it to use the same "mapped" com port.   Attached to my host PC was a USB adapter (with built in RIB) from ebay under $20 and it worked!   Win95 was able to reach through the VM, and reach the radio!  I was able to program my GR1225 repeater.

vmware workstation (paid app, tested and works)

free vmware player: (free, should also work, but i didn't test it)

now i can keep all the programming tools and apps together in one file that is portable and I dont need a special "old school" hardware machine.

Hi all long time since I have posted but I have a question about linking. I have a pretty good size dead spot that I can not overcome. And it happens to be right in an area where I hunt fish 4 wheel and just veg out at. If I get on top of the hill I can hit my repeater no problem but in the lake area (big farm pond actually) 0 coverage. I have another repeater I can put in place and run it solar but can and how can I link them or can I ? Thanks again

Being you're repeater…you have the right to kick them off. Especially if none of them have proper licensing or if you have not given them permission to use the repeater for that purpose.

Not really an option - the attic of our place isn't accessible except by a little hatch that's above a closet with shelving. The other advantage of the basement is that the repeater will be next to one of our two 12 volt battery banks. The other is in the shack.
