    New to GRMS

The FCC call sign is the only communication that MUST be transmitted in English (or Morse Code, but that can get annoying). While it is obviously best to use English when communicating with stations outside your own simplex group or on someone else's repeater, GMRS users are free to use any language they prefer among their own group or on their own personally owned repeater (the repeater owner's preference) as long as the language is being used in normal conversation not being used to hide the plain meaning or as coded messages. Since this was posted under the "New to GMRS" topic, I am simply clarifying that the etiquette comment (while logical) is not part of the FCC rules. (I'm tempted to make a "Some People" comment here, but I'll leave that to someone else.) ?
  2. WRNL832? I believe we made contact on 675 once or twice.
  3. Welcome! I am in central Ohio and use the Johnstown repeaters mostly. What area of Ohio are you in? This site has been very helpful for finding repeaters in my area as I move around the state. (While I don't use repeaters for the majority of my radio use, I've been impressed by the increaded range the repeaters provide.) Jim WRDB702
  4. First the easy one. In order for a license to be in her name she will need to have her own FRN. Regarding your GF using your license... I'm no expert, but the FCC has defined "family" in their licensing rules and I don't recall seeing GF, BF, BFF, or significant other among those included.
  5. So maybe a 10 amp fuse, just in case I bump the power button and accidentally transmit at 50 watts? Makes sense.
  6. Thank you all. Unless someone posts a compelling reason to do otherwise, I will be installing the KG100G using the cigarette lighter as a power source and transmitting only on 20 watts or less until I get it wired through the firewall to the battery. Then again... I might leave it configured this way with a mag mount antenna and move it from vehicle to vehicle when desired.
  7. The radio is a Wouxun KG1000G. The consensus seems to be that as long as I don't exceed the 20 watt medium setting I will be fine.
  8. My options are 20 or 30 watts. So, sticking to 20 sounds like the safe route. Thanks (Connecting & disconnecting the HT is getting old.) Edit: "You should be okay on medium on the wouxun, whether you have it set for 10 or 20 watts." You are correct. I got my info mixed up.
  9. No chance of going that high on the wattage. The radio is limited to 50w. I do not wish to risk any damage to the vehicle, so even the 50w is not being considered on a cigarette lighter connection. Mentioning the alternator brings up another question though. Will the alternator introduce additional noise?
  10. I don't know how many amps the KG1000G pulls at 20w or 30w. It comes with an inline 15amp fuse for use at 50w, so...?
  11. I noticed that after tapping "Submit". Wouxun KG100G - Medium power can be set to 20w or 30w.
  12. Will I be ok temporarily using a cigarette lighter as a power source if I limit the radio to 30w? 20w? (I do plan to tie into the battery, but that hasn't happened yet and I want to get the radio into the van.)
  13. So that's what happened?? I was up on the roof of my house trying to determine the best location for the antenna at the time and thought I fried something. I was scratching my head, "Why can't I connect now that I'm on the roof? It was fine on the ground.!?" ?? I did figure it out, but it was "fun" for a few minutes. I was laughing about my timing, but now that I know it wasn't just maintenance, I'm not smiling anymore. I do hope there is a better solution, but after all the time & money you have invested, I don't fault you for not wanting to put up with the whining.
  14. The Midwest GMRS link is great news. Just a "heads up". I've heard 625 gets more interference from monitors and intercoms than the other frequencies. So far everything seems to be working great though. Thanks again
