1st..your relating CB & Ham radio even in the same sentence is ludicrous! CB was doomed from the get-go for many reasons. And Ham radio is for thoughts who want a hobby and learn the inter-workings of radio per sic. Most of use just want dependable, clear and static free commo…period!
So putting up repeaters to provide dependable service to cover larger areas/communities makes since. I, myself; want something…mobile, low wattage for family camping/fishing trips or shtf sinario. Just my $.02.

WRUE648 reacted to citizensoldier16 in how do i program GMRS repeaters? Manually UV5R
Enter 462.625 while in VFO mode
Hit MENU, then scroll to SFTD
    Hit MENU, then select +
    Hit MENU to save

    Scroll to OFFSET
    Hit MENU, then enter 005.000
    Hit MENU to save

If there is a PL tone:
    MENU then scroll to R-CTCS
MENU then select the correct PL tone
    MENU to save

    MENU then scroll to T-CTCS
MENU then select the correct PL tone
    MENU to save

    That should do it.

I know who you are talking about for the most part. Didn't know this area was so saturated. I am not talking about parrot repeaters and little home grown systems. Some of the stuff around here put well funded amateur setup to shame in the same respects they are at lmr commercial setup levels and locations. I use to be a big 2m repeater fan due to coverage. Shock more and more everyday with what gmrs can do.

I think part of the problem. Is that they need to be published and easier to find.

Finally, got the coveted list from no other then M.W. Now I want to cry. I thought this area was devoid of anything but react repeater. Which turn out are his, several of many repeaters!?

Do we have perfect coverage no. Still some holes. In his plans from what I get, aka remote recievers. Linking, in his wish list, technical problems, ie is etc.

I still firmly believe publishing and actual coverage areas are part of the problem.

At least 7 inches, but try to avoid the first 3 even multiples of 7.  After 2 feet, it doesn't matter.  If you want to have them on at the same time and be able to use one without turning the other off, put them as far apart as possible.

I didnt bother reading this whole thread, but allow me to share my (very recent) experience..
I recently built a repeater using two KG1000G's, a cheap mobile duplexer, a Tram 1486 on the roof and LMR400 coax - all the experts assured that my 'toy' would not work at all. Despite what all the experts predicted, not only did it work, it worked better than I expected, with a range of about 40 miles in each direction.
I have now got my hands on a (very) used Vertex VXR-7000 repeater - after paying for programming and re-tuning the internal duplexer, cost was about $650 - it DOES work better - less de-sense so it is noticeably more sensitive/able to receive signals that the KG1000g setup could not, and i'm getting a bit better range.. But the other big difference is that it is 'full duty cycle' so it can be used 24/7 - Wouxun says that the KG-1000Gs can also be used 24/7, but i'm not sure I believe that claim..
Was I happy with the KG1000G setup? YES!  Am I more happy with the "real" repeater?  Yes.
Do the math and do what works for you..Ignore the 'experts' as many dont seem to understand the difference between the term "will not work at all" and 'will not work perfectly/be the best" ...
