  1. Hello All. I finally put together a base station for the house. I'm using a Kenwood TK-880-1 purchased from ebay, a 30 amp power supply from ebay, about 30 feet of LMR-400 type cable and a Tram 1486 antenna tuned for the GMRS band. The power supply is a bit overkill as the max needed would be 8 amps for this radio. But I didn't want to have to replace it if I later upgrade to a higher power GMRS radio. Today I was able to make my first "radio test" to a repeater (WRPD520) about 21.5 miles away using the TK-880 on high power, about 19.5 watts, with 1.25 SWR.
  2. I had been looking at various Kenwood TK-880s and also a TK-863G, when the Motorola M1225s popped up for a good deal and I bought one of those. Then 2-3 days later one of the TK-880s (this one a high power version) had its price reduced and I jumped on it. It arrived today. The M1225 still hasn't arrived, but hopefully it will be here tomorrow. The TK-880H powers up, shows Version 1.50 and then "unprogram." I was hoping it would still have some frequencies in it so I could test it into a dummy load. I was also hoping (but not expecting) that it would have FPP enabled. No dice in either case. Oh well. So I ordered a usb programming cable from Bluemax49ers. When it gets here I'll see about programming it, and also enable it for FPP. Although with 62,500 possible channels (250 banks of 250 channels) it's doubtful I will need FPP very much.
  3. Hey All, My google-fu isn't working well on this. I want to use mount screws (into the radio chassis) that have some type of knob so I can remove the radio for programming, etc. Any idea what they are? All the Kenwood literature says is 4 x hex-head screws and I've found nothing better. JG
  4. I just purchased a Kenwood TK-880 off of Ebay and a programming cable (BlueMax49ers FTDI USB Serial Cable). I installed KPG-60D for windows and I get an error when I attempt to communicate with the radio. I choose "Program" then "Read from Radio", and get error "Check radio type. Retry or Cancel". I verified the COM port. The radio shows "Program", but the software isn't getting past this message. On other forums I read that software KPG-49D is used for this radio. I downloaded the program but it won't install on my Windows 7 PC. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.
  5. Good morning all..... I have a few questions about the Kenwood TK-880 and the TK-863 First off is the TK-880 part 95 complaint? is the TK-863 part 95 complaint? 2nd is I have a TK-863G and I programmed it myself, however it stays in scan mode all the time.... even if the scan button (icon) is not pressed. also the scan add/delete when pressed adds or deletes all channels with one press.... My TK-880 don't scan unless you press the scan button and the (SCN) icon appears, further more the scan add/delete button places a scan icon beside the channel you add/ delete from the list......... Why is my TK-863G acting so stupid????? any help would be great....
