I ordered a couple of pairs of UV-5Gs for family.  When I got them out of the box a few minutes ago to program them I noticed they were sporting female sma antenna connectors on the radio.  The older ones that I have are the male sma connectors.  Anybody know why they changed or why?  I don't guess it really makes a difference.

Over the years I’ve heard many people concerned about using an SMA with the small (maybe fragile) center pin on the radio. The concern is that the center pin could get damaged. If the center pin is on the antenna, the antenna could easily be replaced. No so if the pin is damaged on the radio.
Almost all of my more expensive radios have the pin on the antenna side rather than the radio. All of my less expensive ones have the pin on the radio.

That makes sense.  My Yaesu VX-7R has a female connector.

Right; my VX6, VX7, and FT5DR all have the female center on the radio (there are actually four different permutations of SMA).

My Yaesu FT65 and FT4, my Alinco DJ-MD5, Wouxun 805, TYT MD-UV380, and a couple Baofeng UV5R variants all have the male pin on the radio.
I’ve added a BNC adapter to a couple of the radio. That allows me to easily swap antennas between them without having to screw and unscrew the antenna.
