Generally yes people do even more so than gmrs, I have it as a backup as it works in a broader area than gmrs especially when obstacles are present. I prefer gmrs for talking between people as cb is run by over juiced fcc rule breaking herds, and as far as I have seen gmrs has not been. The reality is though cb or 11m still is among the most reliable emergency coms only bested by ham. Radio coms are like potato chips, you can't have just one. In the future I plan to add murs and possibly even get a ham license but as of right now gmrs is my main go to but not my only type of radio. Quote
WRYT601 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I wasn't snowed in, but the cold temps gave me a chance to make some serious progress on my arduino program for adding channels to the Uniden 980SSB. I was able to ignore my responsibilities and play radio hacker all weekend! I heard other parts of the country got hammered, we just got the cold up here in northern MN. I came into work and found the septic overflowing. Someone left a door open and the pumps froze. Half our drain field also froze. We had to have the septic pumper truck come get us caught up while I thawed pumps. The driver said he had been getting calls steady with frozen drain fields and tanks that need pumping. -40 isn't bad when we actually have enough snow to insulate things. Northcutt114 1 Quote

I have several GMRS radio's one 50 watt connected to an antennae on top of my house then a couple mobiles for the vehicles and of course a couple pairs of handhelds. I don't have a tech license but do have a Yaesu FT-65 and just recently bought a pair of global radio's. Back in the day I always had a CB in my truck but I notice not too much traffic on them around here anymore. I agree, as many forms of comms as you can get. Quote

WSKY567 Posted January 27 Posted January 27 The weekend in S.E. Michigan was slick and cold. Had to shovel a few times to keep up. Got maybe between 4 and 5 inches total snow. Temps went down to feels like -20°F a few times. A lot of school closings on Monday. People are acting pretty poorly on the roads. Most folks are nailing it starting at intersections making ice with spinning tires. The scanner is pretty constant with people reaching out and touching each other and sundry objects on the road. Radios are working fine although there is not a lot of chatter on GMRS. Great weekend for testing layering techniques. Lscott 1 Quote
WRTC928 Posted January 27 Posted January 27 A friend and I went to Phoenix Thursday for a concert Friday and were planning to fly back Saturday, but by Friday night, flights into Oklahoma City were being cancelled. We got back Monday night after the snowfall was over and most of the highways and major streets were clear. I was concerned that I might not be able to go up my 40-yard-long driveway, but had no problem. If you're going to be stranded, I recommend Phoenix. The weather is beautiful and there is a lot to do.
