I'm a new GMRS user so I am trying to learn the rules and don't mess up. Do you say your call sign before you talk and then again after I'm done . just so i get something right for my first time doing this.

§ 95.1751 GMRS station identification.

Each GMRS station must be identified by transmission of its FCC-assigned call sign at the end of transmissions and at periodic intervals during transmissions except as provided in paragraph (c) of this section. A unit number may be included after the call sign in the identification.

(a) The GMRS station call sign must be transmitted:

(1) Following a single transmission or a series of transmissions; and,

(2) After 15 minutes and at least once every 15 minutes thereafter during a series of transmissions lasting more than 15 minutes

Hi Anubis.  Welcome to the forums.  Simply push the push to talk button, pause a half second, and then say whatever you want to say.  You can say “this is wslq868” first if you want, but it’s certainly not required.  And don’t say it each time you talk.  Just every fifteen minutes or when you finish the conversation. And a lot of people never do say their call signs. Basically it’s not much different than talking on the telephone except that you take turns transmitting.  The most important thing is to just get on the radio. You’ll pick it up in no time.

The answer was already posted after 15 minutes and every 15 minutes and at the end of communication.

 

  If you want to keep it simple, just start with this is followed by your own callsign, then every 15 minutes after, then when you are done with communicating like switching the channels or turning off the radio.

 

  You do not have to use your callsign every time you talk, but you can do so if you wish, most people choose not to every time they hit ptt unless they are on a crowded repeater to prevent confusion of who is the one saying what.

  If you want to be on a repeater  and not talk common courtesy is your callsign followed by listening or monitoring.

Don't make a big deal out of it. Yes use your call sign when starting and ending the call. Be respectful and talk like you would normally. I rarely talk more than 15 minutes so for me it is first and last thing. Is your radio repeater capable and which one do you have. Programming them can be a little challenging at first and you can get plenty of help in here. Good luck have fun and don't get frustrated!
