I've run into a situation where the folks I'll be running with use D223N on the trail. I don't know if they have newer GMRS radios or what. I have the Kenwood software and cable so should be good but I thought I'd ask here if it's an issue before I dive in. Daily use I run with no privacy codes in the remote area where we use our radios. Yet another reason they could not be used as much as good old sub audio tones. Even sub audio tones, I was reading somewhere 100hz and below tones are often not used due to harmonic issues and. If it is a stable, close knit group, like a family or hunting buddies, they may have their radios set up for dense areas and for woods. And they don't want to hear any other chatter. Set up once, use forever, assign a button for a "home" channel. It is very fool-proof setup, also safe and practical to give to 5yo. It is how my family radios are set up. If the question is about advantages of DCS vs CTCSS, bigger pool of codes to chose from comes to mind. I can't think of other advantages.
