In memory mode - using REPTR5 (ch 27) (assuming that’s 462.650), PTT works (ie. light turns to red.) Additionally, I have DIY1 set exactly the same (462.650) but PTT doesn’t work (ie. light stays green.)

Why is this ? Thanks.

I do not have that specific radio but I know that some GMRS radios have the firmware programmed correct and some don't. The firmware should only prevent you from transmitting on non-GMRS frequencies. Some manufacturers mistakenly think you can only have 8 repeater channels that you can transmit on and only monitor after that. It sounds like the UV-9G may be one of those radios.

Thanks but I’m still not clear. Xmit is fine on pre-programmed channel 27 (repeater 5) but when I add the same frequency to channel 31 it doesn’t work. Would it have anything to do with an incorrect tone  ?

If you mean, it doesn't transmit, I suppose I wasn't clear. Some radios only give you 8 repeater channels that will transmit. The rest of them can listen but not transmit. I think they do this because they do not understand the regulations for GMRS radios.

If you mean, it doesn't receive, you need to send the radio back and ask for a new one that works or get your money back. It should at least receive on those other channels.

I’m not absolutely sure about your particular radio but I think you’ll find DIY 31 would be the same as RPTR 1 (AKA 23). DIY 35 will be the same as RPTR 5 (AKA 27). Changing the frequency may not work on preprogrammed DIY channels.

Thanks. I’ve got it working now and I think the secret is to never do any menu settings in VFO mode ! In channel mode, once I saved 462.650 to channel 31, it showed up as DIY1. I think that’s how it went anyway !
