n2877 Posted May 16 Report Posted May 16 Is there anyway that the uv5rm plus can be "jailbroken" to allow you to actually talk to people on walkie talkies like you can with the uv5r? Ive programed all the correct frequencies and any tones needed, copied what is programmed in my uv5r and it doesn't work. I like the I can listen airband but I want to be able to talk to my boys walkie talkies as well. Maybe I ask too much from Baofeng. Or in general Quote

n2877 Posted May 16 Author Report Posted May 16 Oh well. I may still keep it and just get another one to add to the collection Quote
Guest Posted May 16 Report Posted May 16 I’d say no but I’d also ask what is a walkie talkie? What frequency or service are you trying to talk to? Quote

Im referring to a radio you can buy say at Walmart or the baofeng bf-888s to be more precise. I bought 2 of the baofeng bf-888s for my boys to use and thought it would be nice to be able to use the 5rm plus to talk to them along with my two other radios that will. I'n ok if it won't. I do have other radios that do. And I know I will add more radios to my stash that won't be baofeng. They were an affordable entry into amateur and gmrs radio. Quote

WSEG689 Posted December 3 Report Posted December 3 I'm new to GMRS but have been a ham for decades. Looking at a great deal on UV-5RMs but can't confirm that they will transmit in the GMRS band or receive only like NOAA and airband. Can someone here tell me? Quote

So...apparently the UV-5RM is not GMRS/FRS compatible. I have heard that some can be jailbroken and some can't. I've also heard but not confirmed that the 5RMPlus is restricted and can't be jailbroken. The AR-5RM is the same radio but it's unrestricted. That said, I ordered two AR-5RMs and one of them is labeled AR-5RM and the other is labeled UV-5RM but they both are unrestricted. My advice is to order the AR-5RM and if it arrives labeled UV-5RM, don't send it back until you plug it into CHIRP and see what you have. Quote
