WRTC928 Posted January 2 Report Posted January 2 At the moment, I'm listening to someone apparently calling Bingo numbers on FRS/GMRS 19. I have no idea why you'd need a radio to do that. I also can't guess where it's coming from because I live in a very residential part of town. Radio waves do strange things; they could be quite some distance away and conditions just happen to be right today. Quote

WRHS218 Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 The other day a contractor was doing road work near me on a mountain road. They had the traffic down to one lane with guys holding signs at each end of the construction zone. I scanned GMRS while sitting and waiting, finding the flaggers on GMRS 16. The two men couldn't see each other or the work area and were MFing the foreman up one side and down the other. I scanned for the tone. When one flagger told the other that the last car in line was a red Honda I waited and noticed the last car was a Hyundai not a Honda. In a short break in their diatribe about the lead man I told them "The last car is a Hyundai, not Honda". Total nervous silence. As I passed the sign guy I gave him a wave with my handheld. He smiled and told the other guy what was going on. TrikeRadio, amaff and WRTC928 3 Quote
WRUE951 Posted January 4 Report Posted January 4 driving south on Hwy 14 passing Jawbone canyon yesterday afternoon, i heard a woman talking to a dude, (presumably the guys wife or girlfriend) saying she didn't forget the beer Quote
OffRoaderX Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 Today i was in an area known as Eagle Mountain near Joshua Tree and heard a lady calling out to her dog, over the radio, who was helping them find the radio that they had lost in the desert.. apparently the dog could hear her calling him over the radio and led them to it, but it took about an hour.. and we got to listen to the entire show. LeoG Posted January 5 Report Posted January 5 Gotta wonder how many times you have to lose your radio to train a dog to find it. WRTC928 and TrikeRadio 1 1 Quote

That’s actually kind of clever, but annoying to everyone else, for possibly a $12 radio. TrikeRadio 1 Quote

As many consider their pets as part of their immediate family, couldn't the dog grab the radio in his paws and key up and give out some arf's? Be a fun exercise for the Kraken Sdr? Quote
TDM827 Posted Sunday at 05:21 PM Report Posted Sunday at 05:21 PM Mostly hear kids talking back and forth. Also hear contractors / road crews. During the school year I pick up transportation coordinators at our local schools talking to bus drivers and staff. The school traffic is the most entertaining as the transportation coordinators often talk to the bus drivers like a general coordinating a battle plan. Who would have imagined getting kids on to school busses could be so intense. WSHD930 and SteveShannon 1 1 Quote
FishinGary Posted Sunday at 09:58 PM Report Posted Sunday at 09:58 PM An awful lot of schools use FRS. I suppose this is because it's relatively inexpensive and the "license free" designation makes it's seem low-hassle. I've worked at school sites before where they used some Motorola radios, if I recall correctly. Probably business band, but it was a long time ago and I didn't know a lot about it at the time. Each school site in the district used a different channel. SteveShannon 1 Quote

One of my daughters is an SLP at a local elementary school where most of the teachers and all of the admin use FRS radios. I was sitting in the parking lot one day waiting on my granddaughter and scanned and then listened for a while. I told my daughter about doing that and she said she needed to get her own FRS radio. I gave her an old Motorola FRS radio I had purchased new around 2002 or so. I had given two of those to her and her sister to keep in contact with me at a music event we used to attend yearly. It still works perfectly and brought back memories as a bonus. WRUU653 and FishinGary 2 Quote
Socalgmrs Posted Monday at 11:27 PM Report Posted Monday at 11:27 PM I try and not listen to any one else I don’t know. I try and find channels with no traffic then use tones. Can’t stand to listen to strangers on the radio. I do report all schools that go blabbing kids names on the open air waves. It’s totally illegal and an invasion of privacy. Some times lawyers even get involved if they won’t stop. In the end they all stop. jwilkers 1 Quote

Jaay Posted yesterday at 05:05 AM Report Posted yesterday at 05:05 AM I routinely hear a local Nursing home, with employees talking about residents on .625 and a local Dispensary calling out orders on .7125 Quote
LeoG Posted 23 hours ago Report Posted 23 hours ago That's why I leave the radio on 24/7, so I can listen to strangers. But most of them are really people I know and have talked to because of the nets. Jaay 1 Quote
Jaay Posted 22 hours ago Report Posted 22 hours ago Every now and then I hear Wide Load Escorts come through town, they use Gmrs and are unclear on directions, so it's fun to jump in and help them get where they're going ! Quote
