I can't Firmware update TidRadio - H3 GMRS or HAM

WRXR916

Question

Hi All,

I've been trying to update the firmware on my H3 but I feel like I'm doing something wrong. When I hold the PTT and turn on the radio it will not go into its update mode. Is anyone else experiencing this? I've tried this on 2 separate radios. Another thing I've notice is my com port will not stay on unless the radio is on. Not sure how to solve this. also using my USB-C cable.

That seems right.  It’s a virtual com port created by the device driver that only exists to service the device, which is the radio.  It only shows up when the driver detects the radio. The resources needed to create a virtual com port are not needed otherwise and are freed up when no longer needed. It’s not a problem so no “solution” is needed. But because the radio is detected and the com port is created just for it, you shouldn’t even have to tell the software which com port it is. Just turn on the radio and use the software.
For some radios, the usb cable has a chip that converts the usb signals to audio signals and separates them to send them to the microphone jack and receive them from the earphone jack.  In that case, the device is the chip built into the cable so turning the radio off doesn’t free the com port, but unplugging the cable does. Because this type is used for many different purposes, you have to tell the CPS which com port to use.

The Software unfortunately wont let me select the com port unless the radio is on. but i cant place the radio in update mode unless its off...its horrible cycle....I see many videos where this isnt an issue and its frustrating that im not having the same flawless experience.

What is the OS (and version)?  Is it running in a VM?

Windows 11 home 23H2. not a VM

Windows 11 has “Selective Suspend”, which disables ports when unplugged to make battery life longer.  You might try turning that off.  Here’s an article about that:
