One radio connect to repeater the other doesn’t

WSDV256

Question

I have two TD-H3 radios, one can connect to a 675 repeater tone is 141.3 and the other can’t. I first programmed manually then with software then cloned the one that connects and updated firmware too so they should be identical. Anyone experience this or have any ideas of fix?

If they are setup the same you may have a bad radio.  Try simplex between the two and separate them by about 1/3 mile.  If one can contact the other and not vice versa then you have a bad transmitter.

And there have been several reports on this forum lately where a person has two, three, or four TD-H3 (or similar) radios and one of them doesn’t work.

I have communicated simplex but distance was other room, but will try again with greater distances. I did also try contacting the repeater from less than 500’ and didn’t work. I am pretty new to GMRS and don’t have any test equipment yet. What would help troubleshoot this? Also if simplex works at distance I presume that is showing the radio is transmitting and has at least some power. Any other suggestions or just contact manufacturer?

Clone the good radio to the bad.

Before you turn the radio on push the lower button below the 2 PTT buttons.  It usually turns the light on.  While holding this button turn the radio on.

It will display "Wireless Copy"

Do the same for the other radio.

On the radio that works press the same button again and the cloning will begin.  Takes about 30 seconds.  Keep the radios about 1' apart with antennas attached.

When it's complete you need to turn both radios back off, and then on again to complete the cloning process.

This will copy the good radio to the bad.  If it still doesn't work then the bad radio is indeed bad.

This seams to be a common problem.  Just on this forum alone this seams to happen a few times a month and I know several people personally that have the exact same issue with the h3.  One works fine one does not.  With all the reported problems with these radios I don’t see why the company hasn’t fixed the issue.  I also don’t see why people still buy them. I quick internet search reveals this issue and many more.  If possible I’d return them before it’s too late.  Many many other options for the same price or less that do not have these issues.

Because it's a great little radio.  Sucks if you have to return one because of a defect, but such is life.  The company responds quickly and replaces the defective radios without any issues.

Quality control could be better, I agree with that.

Based on anecdotal reports here, about 1 in 4 arrives unable to transmit. It’s simply not probable that all of the other three are “great little radios!” Perhaps some are but it’s entirely possible that any of them has an issue that hasn’t been found.
It’s a great radio for a gambler. 🎰

I have 10.  1 was bad.  It was the first batch I bought.  Lowest output is 4.5 watts and highest is 4.7

Didn't have problems programming any of them using ODMaster or by keyboard.  I like the radio.  It's very compact and still has nice features.  Battery life is 2 days for the most part.

The bad one was replaced without a fight and instead of just giving a new radio they gave me the kit of 1.  So extra battery, charger, cords and two more antennas.  I say they compensated me for the bad talkie.  And they didn't ask for the old one to be returned.

I'm pretty happy with all of them.
