installation question

Question

I am installing my GMRS radio in my ranger 1000.my radio is going to be installed under the passenger bench seat. then I will run the mic/ control head through the seat box.
I think I have a pretty good plan but, my question is. I have a fused wiring harness is there any reason I shouldn't just catch my power right from the 12 volt battery? that way the power will be clean power. the radio is a Retevis RA86, 20 Watt GMRS Radio.

Yes.  Any radio ham, gmrs, cb should be powered directly to the battery both neg and positive.   Some say you should fuse both sides but I’ve been in automotive 12/24v dc electrical systems for almost 30years and never seen power come out of the negative side of a battery.  Most radios have a function in programming that you can set to turn off after some amount of time like 30min ect so if you forget to turn off the radio it doesn’t kill your battery.  But just like older cars head lights just don’t forget.

Yes, the positive side should come directly from the battery.  It’s not necessary to run a separate ground however; the vehicle manufacturers provide chassis ground points that you can use.

By not running the ground directly to the battery it can and will get interference from all the other electronics new cars have a lot and especially the alternator.    Just run the harness you already have that has both red and black wire to the battery.  Why do all that work to skimp on the easy part.

There are various reasons not to run the ground directly to the battery.  This site explains:

the radio I am using was built to be able to use the 12v outlet on a vehicle. I plan on hard wiring it and getting separate radio for my car. I just looked under my front passenger seat and I have a positive and negative wire lugs that come straight from the battery.
