Guest Matt Posted October 2 Report Posted October 2 Hi All, I just got my GMRS license and a few radios. I'm looking for advice on programming for emergency and off-road use. In particular, do I leave channels 1-22 alone and program, say channel 45 with its own tone just for my family? What is the best advice? Thanks, all! Quote
WRXB215 Posted October 2 Report Posted October 2 As long as channel 45 on your radio is not a repeater channel you can use it for simplex. At least that is what I assume you mean when you say "just for my family." You will have to check with your local emcom groups to see it they use GMRS, what channel(s) they use and what tones they my be using. As far as off-roading, use whatever channel or channels your group wants to use. It's always a good idea to make sure you aren't stepping on any conversations already in progress. Quote

Then program and local repeaters you may want on the provided channels with the provided tones. Then if you want to yes program in a simplex channel with a tone for family. It’s not private every one can hear everything said but with tones on simplex you won’t hear other people. That’s exactly what we do here at my place. We will usually always monitor a simplex with tones for road trips, off roading, riding quads, horses, checking cows, or emergency moving of live stock from fires. Quote
Guest Matt Posted October 2 Report Posted October 2 Thank you both for the reply. So, when you say I can program channel 45 on simplex, I think you mean I can program channel 45 with one of the prescribed frequencies on 1-22, then just add a unique tone? Am I getting this right? Quote
Guest Matt Posted October 2 Report Posted October 2 Oh, BTW, I'm using a Wouxon KG 935G. Thanks again! m Quote

Yes. Gmrs only has 22 simplex frequencies to play with. TrikeRadio 1 Quote
