Dumb newbie question about tones

Question

On the repeater info here on mygmrs.com....

Is the tone next to the little box with an arrow pointing into it......  the tone I enter in my radio as the CTST Rx or Tx?   image.png.ef92f05a7f0627dd021aa15e999f6041.png 

Sorry. I couldn't decide if that arrow meant what the Repeater was sending out to my radio or what the Repeater wanted to hear FROM my radio.

It’s the input tone to the repeater, so it’s the output (TX) tone from your radio.

I too am having issues setting up to a repeater.   

The data I have is the repeater freq is 462.700
RX and TX tone is 210.7 but once I input that data into two radios I cant seem to communicate and I know I am doing something wrong. 

What I have done is;

 

created T-CTCSS of 210.7 

And 

R-CTCSS of 210.7

Can anyone tell me if these settings are correct.   I'm using a midland unit that has the repeater channels already in so its an offset of +5

Any help here would be greatly appreciated

That should be right, but you can always get rid of the R-CTCSS and see if the repeater hears you. That way you’ll hear the repeater response regardless of the tone. 
The other thing is don’t try to talk from one radio to the repeater to the other radio that’s just a few feet away. The second radio might be overwhelmed by the power of the first radio (called desense).

How far away are you from the repeater?  Do you have line of sight to the repeater?   What radio and antenna are you using.  Have you heard the repeater in simplex before?   Daily traffic or nets?   Many many times people think they have the programming wrong, when I fact they just are not reaching the repeater.

I'm definitely hitting the repeater.  I'm pretty close with line of sight and using a vehicle mounted higher output unit vs. a handheld.   

I did however have the second (handheld) radio pretty close when doing my testing so as Steve said I may be

desense.  

Thank you both for your responses.  more testing coming today since the rain seems like its going to be incessant

First off thank you for the response.  

I think this is where I may have a bit of confusion.   

If the repeater has RX and TX tones wouldn't removing the R-CTCSS mean that I would NOT be able to hear the response from the repeater since its sending a tone out with it?

No. If your radio is set without a receive tone it reproduces everything detected on that RF frequency. But if a tone is set then it must match.
So by leaving the receive tone out you are able to hear everything on the repeater.
