Radioddity GM-30 70cm ham band TX

Question

Posted

I have a couple of GM-30's that my wife and I use in the Idaho outback for safety comms. I'd like to open it up for 70cm (440) ham band TX. I have put a UHF only antenna on it for improved performance over the OEM dual band antenna, thus I don't really need 2m / VHF TX. I saw a youtube on how to program it with Baofeng (?) firmware opening it all the way up. But I'm hoping for just some "push these buttons while turning it on" action to open up the 70cm band TX. Any suggestions? thanks in advance.

Are you certain about that? It was my understanding that the GM30's hardware limitations made full TX on VHF and UHF impossible. Do you have a link to this youtube video you speak of? I'm not doubting you - just very surprised and curious. I have (2) GM30's myself...

Having owned a Pofung UV-30, the clone of the Radioddity GM-30 since about Day one, here is my best advice:

Buy two Baofeng UV-13s for about $22 each,  They are the Ham Radio version of the Baofeng GM-15, which is also a clone of the GM-30.  These are already open and can operate on GMRS.

No firmware muss and fuss! USB-C charging and Tone Scanning, too!

With my purchase of my UV-13, I retired my TYT TH-UV88, which is really long in the tooth!
