Nation-wide repeater system?

I am listening to a repeater on 449.3000.  Heard someone talking from Florida.

 

Heard the term "reflector" used.

 

Is there a system that allows repeaters to bounce off other repeaters, so that the whole nation can chat on the same frequency?

In my region (Southeast) that would be repeater input, with output on 444.3000.  Maybe your region is backwards.
