  1. Past hour
  2. Now if you wanted to put a repeater in that trailer we’d line up to engineer the shit out of it!
  3. Click on “Repeaters” in the menu bar of this website and then search the database or the map.
  4. How do you find repeaters and then how would you request access to one if you don't have access.....LOL
  5. I sure hope not... I'd hate to think I wasted money getting back into that junk. I think I still have an old cobra radio somewhere...lol
  6. I found a simple explanation on how to use it properly. With a range of only a few miles Maybe 20 on a good day and the right equipment.... What is the use of GMRS outside of using it amongst family members during outings or while working together.
  7. Today
  8. Of course. Depending on the trailer and what's in it, it could be a REALLY bad day. It'd be worse if it takes your headliner or half your dashboard with it, depending on where the radio's mounted and how the cable's run. I'm just saying that, in my opinion, the juice, what of it there may be, just ain't worth the squeeze of dealing with a remote antenna.
  9. "As I mentioned in my previous missive on the matter..."
  10. Putting it on the trailer could get it up higher, at least by a few feet. That probably matters more than the slight difference a few layers of wood and fiberglass contribute toward shadowing the signal that emanates from the truck's antenna. But going from a mount six feet up to a mount ten feet up probably isn't worth the trouble when you have to also add 20 feet more cable. The next problem to contend with would be the ground plane. If it's difficult on a vehicle, it's often even harder on an RV with a fiberglass roof.
  11. Geez. Well I don't have that option. Mines for the farm and family to ride in. We go down to Hatfields a couple of times a year. I never understood those people playing loud music hard to hear your vehicle if breakage happens
  12. If the trailer gets loose, you've got much bigger problems than damaging your coax.
  13. I thought that when you buy a UTV/SidebySide it was in the purchase contract that you must turn up the over-powered stereo volume to full-blast whenever within 5000 yards of other people trying to enjoy nature.
  14. O I get that. those days don't happen for me. Been sober for 2 years and plan to stay that way.
  15. Yes.. and throw in your callsign once in a while.
  16. GMRS is nothing like the CB craze. (Much more civil) IMO your best chances of making contact with someone on GMRS is on a repeater channel. Like Steve said, just get on an open repeater or one you've been approved to use and talk away. BTW,, welcome to GMRS. Hope you have fun and buy more than one radio
  17. Just key up and talk using normal words. Use your ID once every fifteen minutes if you talk that long and ID at the end of a conversation. That’s it.
  18. I'm new to GMRS... Actually haven't bought my first radio yet. I used CB radios back in the 70s. Not really new to radios. However, this is a step up from CB and a little below the level of Ham (Some might say a lot below, I get it)...And I am coms officer for CAP Squadron. Is there a written prodigal for using/Broadcasting GMRS? I hope it's nothing like " breaker 19 this is the rubber duck".... Or spit in the back and yell hello like Andy Griffith in " no Time for Sergeants". You just key up and start talking? I'm kind of a stickler for rules so I want to make sure I understand this system and how to use it properly.
  19. Copy that. I’ll try that.
  20. You may be desensing one radio with the other. Separate them by 50 feet or so.
  21. Yes.. Get at least 50 feet apart and try again, then report back.
  22. No. Getting a bigger/better antenna and/or getting it higher will help more.
  23. The hill is going to do what it does. Where that additional power sometimes can help is if you’re transmitting through vegetation. Vegetation attenuates the signal so more power can make a difference. Hills block the signal and power won’t overcome that. But a high antenna can. In fact the single most effective improvement most people can make is to get their antenna up in the air. The second is to feed it with a cable that doesn’t convert the signal to heat. Power is way down in priority.
  24. Hello everyone. I own both a Rocky Talkie 5W and Midland GXT67 Pro GMRS radio. Up until recently I have not had a need to utilize repeater use, however a group of mine are headed to a camping/concert event in a couple of weeks and the local repeater owner has advertised that attendees are welcome to use it. The location is about 2 hours from where I live. I have both radios on the repeater channel (22). I also have the appropriate tone (CTCSS) in and confirmed it with the owner as well as found the same on myGMRS.com. Where I am confused is both radios, when I key each of them up, I seem to ping some nearby GMRS repeater as there’s a few in my area. I am getting a courtesy tone back. But the radios are not communicating with one another. Example: I key up the Midland and broadcast a “Test 1, 2, 3” but I do not hear that on the Rocky but I DO get the courtesy tone response on the Rocky sometimes. The same applies when I use the opposite radio. Am I miss I something here? Thanks for any help you can provide!
