  1. True FRS radios certified by the FCC are designed for a fixed bandwidth of 12.5 KHz on all channels. Also the power is limited to no more than 2 watts on channels 1-7 and 15-22. Channels 8-14, the interstitial ones, are limited to 0.5 watts max. So if you’re sure the bandwidth is too wide on 8-14 and maybe too high of power those users likely are not using FCC certified radios. They could be miss programmed Part 90 or Ham radios, CCR’s, being used. If that’s the case it’s a whole other issue.

    Jeeps & Radios

Go to ebay and search on “magnetic mic” without the quotes. I just got 1,000 hits, not all them what you want, but lots of them are.

    Call signs

I really don't expect to hear it (call sign) on simplex. Lots of kids and those annoying roger beeps, landscape companies, campgrounds, etc. I DO expect to hear it on a repeater. If you purchased a repeater capable radio and learned how and why to apply a repeater tone to access it, then it's reasonable to assume you know you're supposed to have a license, and are willing to part with $35 for a no-test license for 10 years. After all, you are now transmitting a WIDE ranging signal over several dozen to several hundred square miles. Unlike most Amateur repeaters, many GMRS repeater owners require you to obtain permission to use their repeater, with the obvious requirement that you provide your call sign. It's fairly easy to figure out the PL tone and get on the machine without permission, but that operator will likely be shunned, which is the most effective solution to that problem.

  4. TJ as well. And you should know better by now owning a Jeep. $45 is nothing compared to everything else you've already spent on it

    Call signs

After spending $70 on it, I use it every chance I get.

  6. I passed the Tech exam this morning by remote! I missed one question. Now it's time for some serious thought about which radio. That FT-991a is sure tempting but I may just start out simple with a dual-band unit.
