  1. Thank you for the information. I'm going to do it when I have more time...I've never been in a class or course where I didn't learn something. The program where I am seems to be pretty comprehensive and they also point toward some FEMA online classes that I can take. Thanks again!
  2. Congrats! I was just looking at a CERT program last week. How was it?
  3. Good to know...I was under the impression that with tones set on ham simplex you wouldn't know if the frequency was clear before transmitting so it's considered bad form. I suppose it would be the same with GMRS, but that nobody really cares. I say this with my deep expertise and experience; I've been a ham for 2 weeks and a licensed GMRS user for 3 months, so everyone should listen to me.
  4. I don't think so because amateur should have no CTCSS on simplex and my radio matches what's on the programming chart published on the website.
  5. I haven't had a chance to really test it yet, but I got a commountain speaker mic for my KG-UV9PX and so far, so good. I'll try to remember to update when I get to use it more.
  6. Santa ordered mine for me on December 1st so it's been 11 weeks. Hopefully I'll have it in a month. If you can wait, I think it's going to be worth it; I say this based on my experience so far with the 9PX. The only two gripes are in my original post, and the CTCSS programming definitely makes software a must have. I think I'm going to order the RT Systems software, so I'll update when I do. I don't care about auto racing frequencies, so I'm probably going to replace that bank with ATC frequencies (ground, tower, TRACON, etc.) for airports/areas relevant to me, and good software will make that much easier.
  7. I'm in Richmond near Pony Pasture. Can you hit the 575 repeater from there?
  8. Thank you. Maybe I'll try that and see how it affects battery life. I wish that when the screen is asleep, pressing a button only woke the screen up without executing that button's function, but that could be annoying in other ways.
  9. Unfortunately, the volume doesn't wake it up. It's not a big deal though, I just hit the band button twice and then I don't interrupt anything. It'd would be nice though if volume woke it up. I really don't get the preset tones, but overall, I'm really happy with it so far and I'm really looking forward to getting my GX soon. It was ordered December 1st so hopefully only a month or so to go. Definitely no regrets!
  10. I'm fairly new to this, but don't be surprised if you don't hear morse code or any traffic on the repeater. The one in my area is quiet 99% of the time, but the owner does monitor it quite a bit I think...he's the only contact I've made on that repeater. If you are hitting the repeater, you should hear some noise (the kerchunk) of the repeater after you unkey the mic. If you know you are in range of the repeater and you're outside (definitely not in a car if you're using an HT), it's a good way to tell if your radio is configured properly. Even better if you can establish line of site to a repeater. I would also suggest taking the tone off the repeater output frequency to make sure.
  11. I just got one a few days ago, and so far it seems really nice. The only thing that annoys me is the that there are CTCSS tones on all the simplex frequencies (and on the RX only GMRS frequencies), which I just made a post about in the technical discussion forum, and that the Wouxun software is not very good in my view. I'm going to try the RT Systems software, which requires a different cable I think. Also, the ham frequencies are programmed starting in channel 201, which I don't really understand for this model. The GMRS RX only freqs start at channel 1. Not a big deal though and I don't really mind it since GMRS is channel based. I probably would have done the reverse and started the GMRS frequencies at channel 201. The other thing I forgot to ask about in my post is how to wake up the screen without changing a setting on the radio. What I'm doing now is hitting the monitor button twice or flipping the channel selector up and then back down. But this is annoying if you're scanning because it stops the scan.
  12. I just received my KG-UV9PX and am waiting on my GX. When looking at the programming charts I noticed that CTCSS tones are set on all the simplex and repeater GMRS frequencies, and on all the Ham simplex frequencies on both radios. Why is this? As far as I know, people don't use tones on ham calling frequencies for the most part, and I don't believe on the other simplex frequencies either. For GMRS, I'd have to either remove them or change them anyway unless they just happen to match the tones of others in a group. Also, I am using the Wouxun red cable and their software but am thinking about getting the RT Systems software if it's better than the Wouxun software. Can I buy one RT systems cable for both radios and just buy the software packages for each radio? The Wouxun software seems a bit antiquated and unstable, and it's a pain to go in and remove all the tones. I've had it crash on me a few times and I would love to be able to export the programming to a CSV, be able to copy/paste, etc. I'm running Windows 11 on a fairly new Dell XPS 13 with 32MB RAM. Thanks in advance!
