  1. I'm sure if I wanted to take the time I could install WINE and Play on Linux and get it working or even go into VirtualBox and spin up a Win10 VM and do stuff from there but I'm just too lazy, LOL. I've been running a Linux Distro of one kind or another since Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I'm running a Debian spin called MX-Linux(23.1)with the KDE Desktop and I absolutely love it. I just upgraded from 19.1 so I could get the latest kernnel and features. Long as I can program the channels into my radio I'm fine if I can get the settings from the radio set. Some radios aren't as user friendly and you really need CHIRP to get the the settings but with the KG-805G there's really not much to set so I'm good.
  2. I noticed that the KG-818 and KG-UVD1P profiles in chirp legacy also work with the KG-805G but none of them give me anything in the Settings Tab. Since Wouxun makes a MURS version of this radio us there anyway to unlock it to do VHF for MURS frequencies and even possibly NOAA?
  3. Because I'm not a maid, I don't do Windows, LOL. Their software only work on that crappy Op System. The CHIRP Legacy Flatpak easily installs on my MX 23.1 Linux System and works well enough to get the job done.
  4. Just got my 805g and used the 816g profile in CHIRP to program some channels and it works fine for that. What it doesn't do is let you see the Settings of the radio. I tried some of the other profiles and found that the KG-818 and KG-UVD1P work as well. Still no Settings though.
  5. True to what was said in another post you CAN program the radio in CHIRP Legacy using the KG-816 listing BUT you don't see any Settings. Not that it's much of an issue since they're are very few settings to actually set. Added the CTCSS tones to the 3 local repeaters and added my DPS/Highway Patrol channels and set them to Rx only. Also, set all the GMRS channels to "skip" so when I scan I'll only get the DPS channels. All in all at first impression I'd say for an $80 dollar GMRS/UHF Only radio that's a SuperHet it's a pretty good deal. Especially if you're looking for something simple that's just for the GMRS channels. P.S. The only negative I can think of by this radio being UHF only is no VHF NOAA Weather Radio.
  6. I don't know how we've gotten so far off topic. I really doubt I'll ever need or use a repeater while dove hunting or shooting in the desert so it's a moot point. I simply wanted to talk about the GMRS Pro and the learning curve it has compared to simpler radios like the V2. Once you get the hang of it it's not too bad though. I do wonder if it has something akin to VFO mode though so I could add a frequency without having to save it into memory.
  7. What if it's an Open Repeated free for everyone to use?
  8. Wouldn't it "bother" anyone who's tuned into the simplex channel just the same as everyone who's tuned into the repeater channel? I honestly don't see what the big deal is. It just seems like an easy, automatic way of letting people know you're finished talking. If I'm talking to someone and others who aren't part of the conversation are listening in and don't like hearing a Roger Beep they're more than free to move to a different channel. No one is forcing them to stay and put up with listening to it. I just think "some people" like making a mountain out of a mole hill.
  9. So why is this an issue on Repeater channels?
  10. I don't think it transmits a RB on repeater channels, just simplex.
  11. Currently to listen to DPS/Highway Patrol traffic. Future use will include communication while dove hunting and truck to truck comms while shooting in the desert.
  12. I picked up a Pro as my "high end" GMRS radio and at first I was a bit lost. After watching a few vids on the YouTubes and fooling around with the radio and the app I think I'm starting to figure the radio out. I even got my Roger Beep set after thinking it didn't have one and I programmed the side buttons to change scan sections so I can go from GMRS and DPS(Highway Patrol) frequencies at the long press of the button. I'm actually starting to like this radio. I plan on doing a short review on it, the V2, the UV-5R(hacked for GMRS and MURS)and the Wouxun KG-805G(once it gets here)on my YouTubes channel. Anyway, to sum it up, if you've picked up this radio and feel a bit lost just hang in there, watch some vids and play around with it and you'll soon get the hang of it.
  13. Actually I just watched a video on the YouTubes showing how to get the Roger Beep set on the GMRS Pro, Oh Happy Days.
  14. I agree with Randy. Channel 15 through 22 are also the same Rx frequencies as the 8 repeated channels so you can hear people talking on the repeated channels but you don't have the +5MHz offset or the tone of the repeated set so they can't hear you.
  15. From tests I've seen on the YouTubes the V2 does get somewhere between 5 and 5.5 watts which is what it's rated at. I'm sure the lesser expensive radios only get 3 to 4 watts or if they're "out of spec" maybe 8 to 10 watts but anything calibrated for GMRS use in an HT should be around 5 watts plus/minus 1 watt. JMHO, YMMV.
  16. Good to hear that the kg-816 profile in chirp works for the 805g. I just ordered one and I'll give it a try. Thanks.
  17. Also, while we're on the subject, how does this radio compare to the KG-805G? P.S. Ended up getting the 805G. Newer design, should be easy enough to program DPS Rx only channels.
  18. I can think of one good reason for it. It let's the other person know when you're finished talking without having to say "Over" or "Roger" or "Copy".
  19. After much going around and around on this radio I used the refund from the Wouxun KG-UV9D Plus to pick one up. I still need to pair it with the app that I have on my phone. Seems like you could get an Android Tablet with Bluetooth and use it so you'd have a larger screen to work with. Can't wait to actually give my radio a try. It's so intimidating with all the extra functions and stuff, LOL. P.S. One BIG NEGATIVE with this radio is the lack of the "Roger Beep" feature. Also I tried to program some 460.xxxMHz channels, Rx only and they didn't work. May try again tomorrow since it's suppose to Rx 136-174MHz and 400-520MHz.
  20. This one seems to fly under the radar. Seems to be a solid unit and legalities aside it should work on GMRS frequencies. Anyone have this radio? What do you think about it? P.S. After looking at some videos on YouTube it seems this radio has been out for quite a while(13 plus years, LOL) but it's still being made and it's CHIRP Legacy compatible so I still wonder if it's a decent radio.
  21. Dept. of Public Safety otherwise know as the Highway Patrol.
  22. Thanks for the replies. My main use will be GMRS but I also like to add DPS channels to scan and listen to.
  23. I don't have the Frequency Limits screen in my version of chirp.
  24. OK, even with all the freq. bands set to AM and AM Auto and everything else after I loaded some local Airbands into the radio I still can't get below 136.000MHz. I'm starting to think this radio is broken or something. Guess it's time to send it back to Amazon for a refund and go back to square 1.
