The GMRS license is pretty cheap, $35 for 10years and your entire family can use your license. I do believe the more that get their license will help us all protect keeping the GMRS frequencies available for our use...but I digress.

I totally agree with you WASI800! Operating legally is always the best route to take.

Welcome @WSAG780 and @WSAH452. GMRS is a great service and I know you will both enjoy it. As @gortex2 you should use type certified radios but don't sweat it. Half or more of the people I talk to on GMRS aren't using type certified radios and no one cares as long as they stick to all the rest of the regs.

    Thanks for the welcome WRXB215!

Hello all. I am a new member here. I live in Central PA, am a life-long scanner enthusiast and recently decided to branch out into GMRS. I just got my license and am waiting on my new radio. I opted for a cheaper one to start out...a Radioddity GM-30. I'm hoping to be able to hit a repeater or two from where I live. I just wanted to drop by and say hello.

I am curios, does anyone have there GMRS radio for social reason's? and by that i mean using it like a ham making contacts or talking to friends or making new friends. i always here people talking about having them for off-roading and backpacking but not much when it comes to the social side of things.

I use mine for keeping up with family and friends as well as for making social contacts.

I'm just lookin out for ya buddy.. "Some People" here are REAL sticklers for following ettiequte and every.. single... little... minuscule rule right down to the tiniest little detail, and they go full R-word when anyone deviates even the tiniest bit - it can get pretty ugly.  Don't believe me?  Create a new topic and ask how often you should use your Roger Beep when on a repeater...

Thanks for the advice and looking out! I will definitely be more cognizant on my future posts. It is tough being a newbie attempting to navigate all of this radio learning; however, it is fun!!! By the way, I have learned so much by watching just about every one of your YouTube videos.

No, because we are all talking about something else that has nothing to do with that and veering off-topic would be rude and insulting to the person that started this topic.

Sorry! I did not mean to be rude. I am just attempting to learn more about how to access repeaters in my area. I will just keep trying to figure it out.

We should request that it be pinned to the top so we can refer new people to it.

Your Baofeng and the hypothetical baofeng standing next to the repeater have 6 inch antennas, low quality components, and output only a couple of watts..
The repeater has (probably) a perfectly tuned 10-foot or larger antenna, (probably) very high-end expensive and very sensitive components, and is outputting (probably) upwards of 50 watts.. So not only can the repeater hear everything much better than your $19 Baofeng, but it can squirt it's RF electricities many more fars as well.

I completed the application for my license 10 days ago. How long does it normally take to receive my call sign? Thanks

I received my call sign in about 4 to 5 days. Just keep checking your email and the FCC website. You should receive an email as well.

AWESOME! Congratulations on navigating the FCC site to obtain your license. I believe the Baofengs will serve its purpose until I decide to get a more expensive radio if I decide to do so. Baofengs are great radios to start on and stay on if the budget does not allow for more expensive radios.
