The place with the helpful hardware folks sells small sheets of sheet steel. I picked up a piece 2' x2' for less than $15 there.

Incorrect. The NMO mount takes the shield of the coax cable and creates the ground plane with the roof of the car. When you have it above the the roof on a roof rack, the shield doesn't get to roof to make the ground plane. You can use a 1/2" wave on a roof rack mount https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/cma-rs-660u. You can also use a ground plane disc if you wanted better performance, or to use a 1/4 wave whip https://theantennafarm.com/shop-by-categories/antennas-mounts/antenna-accessories/misc-antenna-parts/11713-taf-disc346-detail

So I bought this mount for the rack but could I just add a ground wire from the mount run it along the rail and ground it to the car somewhere

I was at my typical Thursday night radio coffee group get together last night. One of the guys had a good setup for a ground plane for a mobile antenna mounted on the rack behind the truck cab. I took a couple of photos to share on the group here. Might give a few people some ideas to try out.

So I’m getting ready for a setup similar to this on my Toyota Avalon but mine will be attached to bike rack rail across the roof. The antenna will be over my roof “not attached” so technically I won’t need a ground plane since I have the roof correct ?

  3. It’s funny I just added a ground plane to my Nagoya UT 72 mag mount that I’m using for my house. I had it laying around and decided to use it for my mobile unit when I’m home until I can get a proper antenna . I went to Lowe’s and got a 24x24 sheet of metal for 15$ mounted the antenna and popped it up on the roof used it all day yesterday seemed to work well

  4. I just exported the repeater list for california "chirp" and imported it in chirp i noticed that alot of repeaters have the "s" skip function on them are these repeaters not working? or permission only? was wondering why they had the "s" function see attached

  5. While I Know this is a GMRS forum just wanted to get some feedback on 2m vs 70 bands. Im Doing a mass export of all the repeaters within a 100 miles off repeater book and was wondering what the mass consensus on exporting via 2m or 70cm? Seems like 2m is better for simplex than 70 where 70cm signals tend to penetrate buildings better than 2m. I guess both have its pros and cons just wanted to see what most are using these days.

  6. If you get on the right talkgroup it can be busy all the time. TG 91 is worldwide English speaking and has conversations full time. But keep in mind that when you get on a DMR repeater and change talkgroups, everyone else listening to the repeater is taken to the same talkgroup.
If you want to hear lots of activity and not just use the repeater locally, a hotspot is really the way to go.

I’m sorry to bother but what do you mean by switching talk groups and everyone listening to the repeater is taken to the same talk group ?

  7. Here’s what their website says:
WHAT IF I JUST USE AND DON’T JOIN THE SYSTEM? We won’t kick you off the System. However, we will notice if you’re on a lot and haven’t joined. You’ll probably get an email or phone call to encourage you to become a member. The PAPA System is member-supported and we depend on membership to support repeater maintenance and site rental.

That’s awesome to know thank you for your help and looking into it. I’m going it reprogram my ht today. I’m really surprised how unused DMR is I’ll have someone chime in time from time but that’s about it

AI6BX is not a part of the PAPA System; it appears to be its own system; click on my link.

PAPA offers anyone the ability to use their repeater networks to participate in nets and a 45 day free guest membership (when registered) to test drive the system. It is self-policiing and no payment is required to access the repeater once you know the frequencies and the tones.

Yes it is part of the Redlands PAPA System at least from what i see,

    Paid repeater?

Yes the repeater im trying to connect to AI6BX which is part of the PAPA System which you need to pay for to use apparently. On repeater book it shows it as an open repeater but when you click the link to their site you would nee dto join the papa system which is a downer

If you look at the Brandmeister dashboard you can see if your signal is being received and what strength.
Once you know, then you can configure a channel to the Parrot talkgroup and you’ll be able to hear what you sound like.

Yep defiantly hitting it, didnt know it was a paid repeater so will need to see if its worth the yearly price.

The PAPA System has interconnected DMR repeaters all over SoCAL, including your area; Check their listings here.

You can register as a Guest User for a free 45 day trial and then join if you like.

Watch and listen to worldwide DMR activity on the Brandmeister Hoseline in real time.

Then you can add interesting TalkGroups to your Anytone and go live.

NOTE: How did such a discussion of ham radio dmr get into the GMRS subtopic?

AHHH AI6BX is the repeater im trying to use. Repeater book shows it as open so I didnt realize i needed to pay for use. That would explain why im not hearing anything.

  12. Anywhere there’s a DMR repeater, you should be able to save a channel to join talk groups in that network such as TG 93, USA-Wide on the Brandmeister network. You take everybody on the repeater with you though.

I think my problem is I’m too far from the closest dmr repeater to me. I’m going to drive closer and see if that helps

  13. So I received my radio on Saturday and yes it’s a lot took me the whole day to figure it out but I have it set up now and have a somewhat good understanding of how to program it. You definitely need a hotspot to connect to the internet to use talk groups. I am just barely close enough to a repeater but the socal and California talk groups are pretty much dead. Someone will chime in every now and then but that’s about it. Gonna play with it some more today and see if maybe I’m doing something wrong

  14. I’m in the fence on this one while I do have uv9g gmrs radios I’ve been thinking of just going with either a Anytone atd878uvll plus it’s has dual band cause if and when the shtf I want to be able to communicate on both gmrs and ham frequencies I do plan to get a ham license but that all get thrown out the door in an emergency. I do play by the rules but it doesn’t make sense to carry around 2 radios when one can do it all

  15. Yeah I'm new to this and didn't know repeaters were linked via the internet. So question because this is what I'm concerned about so when the internet goes down basically were all going to be stuck on simplex or the area one repeater may cover because they will not be linked?

  16. Illegally yes. Unlike ham, gmrs repeater pairs are channelized and the repeater pairs are pre-assigned. This includes input and output frequencies on gmrs.

Someone tried it locally by reversing a repeater pair. Which on gmrs is illegal.

You can, run into a host of issues. One of the big ones is looping between the 2 repeaters, until one times out or burns up. Whole host of reasons not to.

Usually, easy fix is get the antenna about 100 feet up in the air (tower, tree, building) clear of obstruction. Then you'll average 12-18 miles of foot print (give or take 35 watts). Of course, mileage will vary with terrain and with repeater wattage/equipment.

May I ask what spurred this thought process?

Really so you can’t link gmrs repeaters together ? After doing some reading I guess it can be done via internet, that’s a real bummer. So when shtf happens and the internet goes out communication through those repeaters are dead. Is it the same for ham?

  17. That’s called kerchunking.  Most people don’t like that.   Just because you can open the squelch of a repeater does not mean it can hear your transmission. Are you close enough?   Good line of site?  Did you email or contact the owner of the repeater?  Usually they are very helpful.

So I think I just solved my problem I was too far away I just got back from driving closer to the repeater and sure enough I made contact

I got permission to use a local repeater

    Example:

    input tone = 116 DPL

    output tone = 243 DPL

Now in CHIRP when i go to setup I use

    Screenshot2024-03-11at1_11_27PM.png.9e170deb389af606bba9d1dfa166f783.png

    Is this correct?

I only ask because when I setup this way I cannot hear any traffic, but if i go into the menu on handset and change the R-DCS D243 to OFF then i can hear traffic.

I know im hitting the repeater as i get a response from the repeater itself. Thanks in advance for any help

  19. Now are you talking about the same repeater or traffic on the same frequency, but not that particular repeater?  I receive traffic from different repeaters using the same freq and it can be hard to differentiate which repeater it's coming from if you don't use tsql.

So it would be on the repeater because I cannot reach her on simplex one to one. When I am closer to her we use channel 18 for simplex which has a pl tone so I only hear her.

  20. Just to clarify an important point:
Any frequency (or repeater channel) can only be used for ONE transmission at a time (unless the second conversation is too far away to interfere with the first).
Radio basically only allows for one person to speak at a time - one can either transmit or receive and multiple transmissions simultaneously are either having one winner (strongest signal) or much not-understandable "noise" (similar signal strength).

Thanks just thought I’d ask kinda figured wasn’t possible

  21. My daughter and I are currently setup to use a local repeater "she lives too far for Simplex Operation". Is there a way to setup a "Privacy Tone PL CTCSS" etc" to cut out others talking while using a repeater? I do realize our conversations are not private and never will be. I'm just looking to somehow cut out the outside chatter if and when we need to talk.
