  1. Hmm.. that might work. I had not thought about the back hatch... that might work actually. gotta check my coax length but I think i might have enough.
  2. Thanks for all the input and Ideas everyone. I'll take a look again and see if I can find a way that works best. I am mounting this on the roof of a VW Passat Wagon. I like putting it through the sunroof but I think If i closed it all the way the fitting between the metal/glass parts would be too tight. The passenger door may be better. I'll look at it closer again.
  3. I did try putting it through my door jam once... but I guess I was a bit paranoid about doing it. It did seem to make the cable take on a "bend" or some amount but straightened back out again. I was just wondering if it is better to try to lay it down lengthwise in the door jam, or toward on edge of the door or the other. And yeah... not that much to have to replace it but I don't want to damage it just because I was not doing it the best way.
  4. I have a mag mount antenna that I have used on my car roof successfully. I have routed it into my sun roof which works fine except for the wind noise I have to deal with with the roof glass tilted up just a bit to not pinch the cable. I have thought about routing it through a door but I am paranoid of pinching / damaging the coax. Is there a preferred or recommended way to route a mobile coax cable through a door without crushing it? Any methods you have used or tried that worked (or didn't work) that I should be aware of?
  5. From the mind of a nube GMRS user like me... LOL
  6. Very true. Yeah I was just always curious if it was possible and fit the rules. Yes, you would probably make a lot of people mad and the FCC could probably call it an "RF NETWORK" to get you... so not a good idea anyway.
  7. Oh... repeaters are not allowed to transmit on "input" frequencies? it would not necessarily be a loop it it transmitted to the input on a different channel would it? (Example: if repeater A takes input on 467.675 and outputs to 467.700 ... which Repeater B picks up and re-transmits to 462.700) (if it is ok for a repeater to transmit to an input frequency)
  8. I know everyone is sort of sick of this topic now but I was wondering... if a repeater was set up to take input and retransmit to the input of another repeater further away... rather than re transmit on the regular output frequency... thus "linking" between it and another repeater further away... would that be ok as defined by the FCC. The connection would be over the air not via wires or networks or internet. Just curious if this kind of "daisy chain" via radio only would be something that could be legitimate.
  9. Besides some older radios not being able to use DCS... Are there any other real differences? Is DCS possibly more reliable or able to overcome static or interference more so than CTCSS ?
  10. I second this... Some way to say I don't need to ever see responses to this thread anymore.
  11. And I suppose neither repeater owner is willing to just change their tones? Seems like they would want to so it was not messing up people between the two.
  12. Well... next time I try to hit that repeater 800 miles away...
  13. WOW! Thank you for that link! I have been looking for something that could show line of sight and take elevation into consideration. Do you know if it also accounts for curvature of the earth over distance or does it just simple calculate on elevations.
  14. I like some of the ideas in your NET like mentioning one's radio, and a measurable response about the quality of their check-in. In the weekly Net that I participate in, the net controller almost always says everyone has a "good signal" ... and well.. sometimes to me at least it does not seem some are that strong or clear. I think it is a more practical and useful method your group is using if the purpose is to check and test communications and how they are working. I might suggest this to our net controller. The tribute to a "permanently logged off" member also was a touching thing to do. We have members how have passed listed as "silent key" members. Many are checked in by the net controller as silent keys for a number of weeks or more after their passing in memory of their years of service to the club.
  15. Good point. I don't think twice about the AM/FM radio that is factory installed. So yeah, I assume a mobile unit would be fine. I guess I am just a bit paranoid. I currently only have HT units and I don't leave them in the car for both fear (however unfounded) of the heat killing them... and because I don't need them to attract thieves. (of course I could just put them out of sight in the glove box or something.) Maybe I am over-thinking this!
  16. Hmm interesting idea. I guess that means that the mic's problem was maybe not so much the ablity or quality of the hardware it just needed some sound diffusion material. I might open up my hand mic and see if I can put some cotton in there too! THanks
  17. any suggestions for a small lapel mic that works better? Just find one that costs more than the cheap ones from Tidradio?
  18. Thanks, yes that is kinda what I was asking for since I already hook up my HT to a mag mount antenna and use a hand mic... which is great but this question is more for things I might want to do to "upgrade" a bit for the future. Good point. Yeah I was kinda wondering if I should just forget the swapping out option and get one for the car and one for a base if I want it. Just trying to see if I can ease into it without the cash getting out of hand right away. I too seem to have too many other hobbies demanding money. lol. That (yeah I have this habit of spilling drinks on things), and I guess I am also concerned about leaving a radio in a hot car and it being a visible target for thieves. Do mobil radios do ok in hot cars? I am kindof afraid of cooking it to death if it is a more permanent install.
  19. interesting solution... My cup holders are in the center console close to my arm and the parking brake lever so... Not sure if there is room for it, but cool idea.
  20. Yeah that is what I am doing right now with my TD-H3s.. but I don't have a cupholder mount like that. but when and if I decide to get a "real" mobile radio, I was wondering if there is an easy quick mount / quick release way to put it in nicely that is secure and usable. For now I am happy to use my HT setup but... just thinking toward upgrades.
  21. And as @WRXB215 Stated earlier in the tread... it might be more appropriate for her to user your sister's callsign if she lives closer... use it as unit two or something.
  22. How do you like that "upgraded" shoulder mic / hand mic? I have the older model and it is ... ok... but it feels cheap and people think it sounds bad. Does that newer model sound better?
  23. I assume this has been asked and answered before but searching and finding the answers in the forums past posts is a pain so... I am wondering what kind of ease or pain it can be to have one mobile unit that you use as a base AND occasionally put in your car and then remove to use at home as a base again. Are there quick mount methods that you can easily and quickly put radio in your car securely and hook it up to your antenna, and then easily take it out and easily hook it up to your power supply and home antenna? or should I just not be cheap and get a radio for the car and leave it in there and another for the house? I would really like to see if it is at all practical and easy to be able to move it back and forth based on everyone's experience, or if it is just not really worth the trouble. Thanks
  24. Yeah it works well, it is just a bit more of a hassle having to take the HT antenna off, hook it up to the roof antenna cable, then figure out where you can mount or place your radio and handset. I suspect that if I decide I like using the radio in the car a lot i would eventually mount a permanent radio in the car but for now I am keeping it inexpensive.
