  1. Yes, I also tried and it seems as if you need the FCC ID for that link, I am going to go and look, As I recall PastorGary, Spd640 and a few other members were compiling a list of part95 radios. I am sure I saw a list of a whole bunch of radios at some point. I was also told part95A is a GMRS only subcategory, so those radios do not include FRS, but offer the benifit of removable antennas.
  2. Try this thread. http://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/94-part-95-certified-transceivers-kenwood-motorola-etc/
  3. very nice and a fair price.
  4. I always wondered what the frequency's pre-programmed into these radios are for, I always over write with my own, those of us that are also HAM licensed know, we would never want to transmit outside of our accepted band. given they were purchased at a flea market, I wonder if it was a Jobber that re-sale new or used goods, and if they had a stock of these BF radios. My luck, I never run across a stand with much interesting radio stuff. although I have to admit last time I saw more CB radios than in my whole life. I just wait till the annual HAM Free Flea.
  5. now it all makes sense. I allowed my misunderstanding of the use of meter to alter my learning how it really works. never thought of it as a wave pool. as basic as it is, now I have some more learning to do. but I get it. lol I must assume my old mobile duplexer is "not" tuned properly, since my SWR was 2.5 into 11watt's or it is a bad duplexer to begin with. I had planned to reuse it but now I'm not so sure. I am still using 2 segments of LMR400 with a N male to N female splice in the middle. "no barrel" I wish to replace it with LDF4-50a, but current e-bag prices are not good. I have seen better deals in the past. I also have not added the stress loop as Jeremy mentioned. I figured I will have to do top maintenance eventually, I'll do it all when I raise it the final 10 feet. all and all range is not as good since I got my SWR readings down. I will check in from the airport on Tuesday, will let you know how that goes. Thanks and Best Regards....Jim...
  6. Thank you PG. I am only just now understanding the SWR test readings. you can count on more questions, as soon as I figure out what my questions are.
  7. Ok, I got the PD duplexer installed yesterday, when I do my SWR test, I get 11watts forward and 0.5 reflected. in fact the reflected needle does not really move at all. Is this normal? with the previous mobile duplexer, I was getting 11 watts forward and 2.5 reflected. Someone please help me understand these readings. SWR readings confuse me.
  8. Welcome to the group Jeff: using PL tones only filters out unwanted conversations, it does not make any conversation private. anyone with a scanner can listen to all conversations on any given channel. Or they can set a PL tone and only listen to a single group. I do believe some repeaters do multi PL tones as well as multi DCS tones, This allows many features like HT to HT calling and group announcements. Repeaters like this are expensive. I have an old Uniden 25 watt repeater (non part95 cert) on a 9db comet antenna at 40' with LMR400 feedline and a just installed Phelps Dodge duplexer. I am getting 12 plus miles of HT coverage. single PL tone. even here in Fort Lauderdale, I get almost no guest traffic/use. my 25 watt's drowns out all the children and business's misusing the frequency. all except the Phelps Dodge duplexer, this is a cheap $600 setup. Concentrate on quality feedline and antenna height. The higher the better distance you'll get. and lastly no dumb questions, question everything, Best Regards..Jim..
  9. Very Interesting, these radios are too easy to get and do not come pre-programmed. even if they did they don't come with any info about what frequency's may be used and what license's are required for what frequency's. I read the comments and noticed HAM users calling out the fact the BF radios are not even type accepted for HAM or GMRS use. Not sure what this has to do with traditional family's and family value's, any parent traditional or non traditional, should know how to curb their children, and help keep them out of trouble.
  10. The new duplexer came today, very nice, very heavy. unfortunately I have to wait for proper cables to hook it up. I checked thru my adapters, but no way to rig it. so I figure Friday or Saturday.
  11. Hamexam.org has flash cards and practice exams for all three elements
  12. The one I purchased is an older PD. but I got an e-mail from the technician this morning and he said it tuned right up and preformed better than expected. here is the data sheet.
  13. yes, I have hear that they are non-plated copper elements, not sure if that is why they are PIA. I was looking at wacoms and PD's after I heard about the square ones.
  14. the meter is the Mfj842, I plan to get a better digital unit, should make it a priority. I plan to check the TX SWR w/o the duplexer tomorrow. will let you know how it goes.
  15. Hey John, I assume you reference a ctcss decoder? May I ask what decoder you use and if you recommend the one you have or another unit? also does it decode DCS also?
  16. Very cool, through this pic I found your photobucket, All I can say is WOW.
  17. Yes John, the one on top is my old one, and the one in the middle is what I am waiting to be tuned, what is the extra 2 can's? should I plan a future upgrade? I know there are notch cavity's and filter cavity's. your input is greatly appreciated. Jim,.,,,
  18. I have been running a repeater here in south Florida, I have been using an RFS compact duplexer the whole time, but it seems to be the source of my high SWR readings, I acquired this unit with the Uniden repeater and had it tuned by a local HAM. so I purchased a Phelps Dodge 4 can style duplexer tuned to TX471 MHZ RX 474 MHZ , I chose based on technicians recommendation and I have arranged to have it shipped directly to the technician for a professional tune. Now with questions, Should I have going with a 6 can set? are full can style better than the small portable duplexers? some units use small cheap looking coax. yet others use LMR400, any difference? I know this is a small forum, but I like the people here, so ring in guys.
  19. Great Picture! Take care and best of LUCK.
  20. I still have the UV5r's I started with, They both work perfectly, one is missing the volume knob, I got extra battery's in today. These radios are good radios although they are not Part95 certified and not technically suitable for legal GMRS use. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! for me these radios were a great place to start. Emission splatter seems minimal, works with both of my repeaters in both wide and narrow. These radios are cheap enough to be disposable and that opens up lot's of possibility's. I also like the BF888 UHF radios and the UV3r 2 watt, mini dual banders. "again not Part95" The 888 is a 5 watt UHF only radio, could be perfect for basic users, all channels can be set to same, so user can not accidentally change settings. The UV3r has a locking knob that controls menu options and volume pre-set's, making it also hard to change settings by accident, or turn the volume all the way down. Both the 888 and the UV3r are pocket radios, so very attractive for persons wishing a more compact radio.
  21. Indeed, as a Family Business you are allowed, even employees if they each obtain a GMRS license. What we have here in south Florida is Taxi, Tow trucks, Hotels and Apartment building services using GMRS, They make no call sign announcements, likely because they possess no license to begin with. I monitor the band and listen for info with regard to who they are and what kind of work/business. The FCC has a field office in Miami so complaints can be made locally. After I get my SWR fixed on my repeater, I will have more time to do the follow up work and make a report. Best regards Jim...
  22. yep, yep, too bad you couldn't have stayed longer. I realized the other day the extension cord that ran out to the box had the ground broken off. so I replaced it today. I plan to do SWR test over the next day or so. Still haven't put the other 10 feet up, but will be soon enough. on that mobile you had, How far do you think you can run it from the head? any idea if you can run 40' or so?
  23. very good then. Yes, Yes, Yes get your Ham. it's pretty easy and opens up the air waves. If you already have basic radio knowledge and understand basic electricity, study for your General and Extra, you will do well. Also when you need technical help with GMRS a basic GMRS user will not be able to help you. If you really need help you can always count on a good HAM operator. Sorry about your location, lol If I am more than a half hour from the ocean, I feel land locked.
  24. Yes PastorG, I agree,I have a good quality speaker mic on my main HT, Makes for a much more pleasant HT operating experience. easier to set the radio up high and still use it. As I have found Height is much more important than Watt's, Power.
  25. Welcome Binko: you plan to us these for HAM bands or for GMRS? none of the Beofeng radios are Part95 certified for use on GMRS, so be aware if you use with GMRS you will not be legal. "if that is of concern to you.
