  1. mobile unit's are expensive. but most dual band, UHF/VHF radios can be programed for FRS/GMRS, MURS, air craft, Marine and most other freq's. in the 2 meter and 70 cm bands. I am not sure of the legality of using Marine freq's on land though.

  2. Looked a bit further.   The standard business model GU-16 comes with software and cable.  The GMRS model does not but specifies that the dealer can reprogram different codes.  It would stand to reason that the same software would work for both.  That is the only problem that I see is the pre-programmed codes.  I checked the FCC website and the Part 95 acceptance is there for the GMRS model and the Part 90 is there for the standard model.   ERP as tested was 4.23 watts and .73 watts.

    Thank you Billy,

  3. My repeater is only 20' above ground plane, even here in flat Florida I get good range. you live on a hill? you do not need a huge tower, just 6' to 10' above the roof of your house and or clearing most trees and vegetation. Yes a base station is a good second option, but don't give up on the repeater just yet. I obtained a "tilt over" telescoping tower, and my other half is not keen on a tower either, but with careful placement, it will be 90% covered by a tree canopy and eventually a fake palm trunk from the base up into the canopy. the only part that will show will be the top few feet of tower and the antenna on top of that. since it's telescoping I will be able to lower it so just the antenna rises above the tree line. get creative.  in a wooded area, done correctly a 40' to 50' tower can be made mostly stealth. Don't worry about money spent on a good omni antenna, work with it for now and get a yagi for a special occasion.

  4. yeah, you may wish to get a yagi tuned to the freq. that you want. don't chance it and consider "NEW" or like new, and still spend lot's of time, prepping connections. when you deploy an antenna, the last thing you want is to already need to redoit.              FYI: Higher Freq. equals shorter elements, easier to file off a little extra than to add.

  5. I do not own a comet, but it has similar specs to my workman UVS200, on mine the radome is made of fiberglass tube and I have been warned many times that in high winds this get's damaged and allows water to leak in. needless to say I prepared the heck out of it with waterproof rubbery stuff. If it's two part. make sure all connections are tight. tight water tight. use the rubbery stuff.

  6. Yagi's are awesome, directional, high gain, add a rotor or create a "lobe": that suit's your needs. I have seen this e-bay listing, hard to be sure if it's electrically sound, w/o testing it. if you get something used like this make sure to refurbish b4 you put into service. make sure is water tight. Take this into account as any savings or cutting corners may lead to additional work or climbing the tower again in the near future.

  7. a budget of 350 covered my sm50 twin and an RFS duplexer, you will also need some LMR400 feed line, apx 50 dollars, and a good antenna 50 to 100 dollars. if you go cheap, well you get what you pay for. I do not know anything about riton, but that Cellwave duplexer is worth 100 bucks. If you have access to the equipment to tune it you will want a good one.

  8. Looks like it may take more time and money than it is work and I think those are crystal controlled ,if so by the time you order crystals and tunes it and find duplexer cables and tune the duplexer you could buy a better repeater.

    Agreed

  9. yes, if you have several thousands of dollars worth of equipment. some talk of a hand method, but I doubt you would have much luck with that. besides the one you are looking at has no duplexer to begin with. Go with separate antennas until you have a duplexer ready. spend more money on your antenna and feed lines and you will be happy. all the watt's and sensitivity won't do much good with poor feed line.

  10. This is a good seller. I got my Motorola twin sm50 repeater from him and he is awesome post purchase support. I do not know the one you linked, I thought it was a simplex at first. do the research and take your time. Be very careful buying from E-bay sellers,. I got Uniden from another seller, he purchased it from yet another e-bayer and all the time it needed the duplexer re-tuned to the radio freq. no telling how many people it passed thru b4 it got to me. none the less, after the duplexer was re tuned it preforms perfectly at 25watt's. but the seller was clueless and advertised it, the way he got it. "Ready for Deployment" It was far from it as it came apart in shipping since it was missing most of the screws and bolts needed to keep the radios from moving around. I can recommend the twin sm50's set, from this guy. there is no delay, but that can be added after you get it up and running. he also packs the radios so they will not come apart or be damaged in shipping. he answered all my questions hourly over the weekend.

  11. Yes we did much research and they had no license at all. and they moved their communications now and the community has a repeater for watch and emergency communications. Yes I do hear much business communications on GMRS channels, I use a 13.8 DB HOZ. yagi antenna and a rotor at 20 feet or so to scan and I can not find any other business repeaters on the GMRS services. but lot's of Taxi cab's and other simplex business communications for sure. less than 10% of the GMRS communications I hear are even close to legal. even the citizens on our community repeater, seldom announce their call sign's, so I usually have to announce mine to make up for it. all and all it's ok with me. it's all for the good of seniors and the neighborhoods involved.  none the less the Hotel group is probably better off on a more private channel anyway. they may even upgraded and have all the features we only dream of.

  12. Looks like my 24 to 13.8 volt power supply on my FTL675 repeater was unstable and allowed a surge to blow the transmitter fuse. I contacted the seller and he sent me directions to replace it, it is a green resistor looking thing and I have already disassembled and isolated the fuse. in the next day or so, I will heat up the solder gun and replace it. unfortunately I must also obtain a more stable power supply, I am considering a CV/CC "constant current/ constant voltage stabilized type, Much more expensive. does anyone have any suggestions?

  13. I do not use MURS. but I found my self needy to read this due to lack of activity here on this site. We need new members and more active members. is there anyway to get device wholesalers or merchants to include resource information with their new radios. a notation if you plan to use this for GMRS check out these sites, ie: myGMRS.com or if you plan to use it for HAM, check out these links. My guess is that more than 90% of the people that buy and use these radios don't get licensed to begin with. I am getting my nephew into radio`and I hope he passes his exam for his HAM. I like GMRS for contacting family and friends who do not have or won't get their HAM license. in any event, let's reach out in some way to welcome new GMRS users and members on this site. I am also on RR and I notice other members from here there. but myGMRS.com has a place as it serves a particular need.

  14. If you are looking for a cheap and quick durable radio look at the Baofeng commercial/industrial types.   Bf-666, 777 and 888.   Look for the 5 watt models but the 3 watt ones work well.

I ask a seller if these would do repeater splits and was told no. how did you make this work?
