Would it be better to get a home base kind of radio or a handheld? I feel like a home base sort would have more power. There’s more accessories for that sort of radio…

I absolutely agree that support is crucial! And people you can learn from. There’s quite a few radio clubs within my vicinity. One has an emergency team that seems interesting. I’m sure I’m going to have to have my general license to join that. But it gives me a reason to learn and be proficient!

As of tonight, I’ve been blessed to become an amateur amateur radio person. So, with all of y’all’s knowledge and expertise, what tips, suggestions, advice, dingleberries of wisdom do y’all have for new hams?

It’s a spirited question and has a reason to be answered justly. Im not sure, but I joined in the celebration of 2 others Saturday when one of them apparently did some work on their repeater and the fruits thereof resulted in a remarkable performance of range and clarity. We rejoiced... and then my lovely wife said we must have nothing better to do. I felt that was my first persecution as an official radio dork. And if so, one I’ll gladly bear. When did you become a radio dork? And how?

Seems the bug is pretty serious lol. Battle won. One Maverick 88 Cruiser on the way. I always feel like a nervous dad waiting to see his baby when I go get a new piece of weaponry.

I am kind of a cheap gun connesuer (however you spell that) I’ve recently fallen in love with a Charles Daly 410. And right now, I’m kind of aggravating or making my case why a Mossberg Maverick 88 Cruiser is a good investment.

I’m kind of having fun with this thing. I listened to some guys talk about working on aggravating vehicles and drinking the other day. There’s a channel that has a lot of Spanish and pac-man sound effects.. not sure what it is but comes in clear. I am noticing that the cigarette lighter power tends to affect reception. It’s an annoyance but I’ll live with it.

My wife is already in mourning over my newest hobby. To be fair I’m not as vocal about her purse addiction.

I’ve teamed up with a fairly local gmrs club. Meeting with them tomorrow to learn. The gmrs community seems to be pretty tight knit and helpful.

I can only imagine this in a parking garage, car wash, etc.. lol.

I kind of walked in on a discussion today.. kind of distorted and I couldn’t hear them well. I called for a radio check and they shut up. Must’ve been the only people in cb in my area and now here’s a new dude in town and I ain’t welcome.

I hear a lot of people. The radio has no problem with picking up signals and range. They just can’t hear me.

So far, at 10 inches long, it’s conveniently located on my dashboard. But it works!

Ok so I put in the information. Uploaded it. Still don’t think I’m getting any repeaters unless I’m not doing something right. Which is highly likely.
