  1. I love my AR-5RM's. Just beware of the hair trigger PTT's. Set duplex to "off" in chirp for channels you don't want to accidentally tx on. Because it will happen with this radio.
  2. I have heard several people claim that soldering large wires to connectors of any sort is less superior than a mechanically crimped connection. I learned this while researching to build my solar battery bank. Some claimed that the reason crimped is superior to solder is the addition of dissimilar metals being added to the connection. And that copper wire with a high-quality crimped copper lug introduced less loss and made for a physically stronger connection. Does anyone have input on that idea? And how it may translate to coax connections? My friend that sets up towers and equipment for Wisconsin's WISCOM system seems to only use crimp ons for coax. maybe that's just easier out in the field.
  3. It's my favorite GMRS antenna for portables. Although the length is troublesome when carried on a belt sometimes, or an inside coat pocket. But they definitely help range.
  4. Very cool man.
  5. Just like a child with his worn-out old teddy bear, a new one just won't be the same.
  6. Wives of Hams convention???
  7. My first guess is because that's what everyone else uses. But maybe also for a more weatherproof connection for IP67 rating. Maybe, IDK. I haven't seen a watertight BNC. But that would be cool. My opinion is that all portables should have BNC
  8. sma to bnc adapters put one on each antenna and each radio for quick and easy antenna swaps and storage. I also use pl259 to bnc adapters too.
  9. That's where my mind was going. I like that. We live in the age of eieio. And not just radios.
  10. what does this mean, McDonald's ?
  11. I'm a member of the B.A.R.C. (like the sound a dog makes) Beargrease Amateur Radio Coalition. This coming Sunday, January 25th, I will be heading up the north shore of Lake Superior to volunteer at the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. Our club is a group of volunteers that play a vital role of safety and communications during the marathon. Much of the area has little or no cell phone service. I will be camping for 3 nights in the back of my Bronco Sport in subzero temps, whilst shooting video of the experience to post on our YouTube channel. I hope to highlight not only the marathon and its traditions but also ham radio and the organization behind this event. Showing how this form of communication can be used for so much more than "rag chewing". I invite you all to follow along with me on my adventures. While I am very excited about this, I am also very concerned about my own safety in the elements of nature. I am taking every step quite seriously. Here is a link to the event... 12. Motorola guys are all the same...
  13. The Google machine says 49.860
  14. I have a friend who is a writer. Made a great living writing everything from books to commercials, to critic reviews. His vocabulary is amazing. I love having conversations with him cuz when I'm at a loss for a word, which happens a lot, he's johnny on the spot to fill it in.
  15. The 1980's Fisher Price Sky Talkers were my introduction to two way radios. My cousin and I had a blast with those. Loved the Morse Code chart on the front. I wonder what frequency they used. I see there are some still around on Ebay. I should try to get my hands on a pair again. It's funny how much of the eighties was centered around Star Wars. Just the play on words for these radios is a prime example.
