  1. Sooo...jumping after reading. I understand that more Watts doesn't necessarily ,equate to more fars. I realize from here that my repeater pushing 24 Watts will work almost as well as 50 Watts. My question is about Watts vs fars and obstacles. Is Watts vs fars linear, geometric, exponential? For example: 5W output on the repeater vs. 24W output more drastic improvement than 24W to 50W. Second part is: does more Watts afford more 'muscle' to propagate through foliage?
  2. Thank you Gang. I am aware that RG58 is not a good choice. That was what was on hand at the time to play here in the shack. I have and am using RG213 and KMR400 for testing and radio play.
  3. Thank you all. My first stop is call/contact them and see what can be done....
  4. I share your old thing, that's why I ask via type so I can look back at it!
  5. Bummer, I'll see what I can do...Any low budget options for this type of Radio (70cm-2m). Course I am going for my general and realize I will have several radios eventually as the rabbit hole swallows me up!
  6. But thank you, Sir.
  7. Jesverty SPS-3011 set at 13.8V
  8. Elmer/Elmo/Radio dorks/Etc..(not meant to be derogatory, affectionate), As the title says, I am new (KR4FHF). I have a TYT TH-9800. Getting at 1.01-1.65 SWR between freqs on 70cm and 2m. Coax is rg58 (I know....And length in this case made no difference with my problem). Antenna is about 60' up but I am on a wooded lot. I have it in as clear of a spot as I can hanging from a tree. I adjusted the height according to SWR. Repeaters report decent signal report. I have been on nets with no one saying anything about my trans. While listening, the speaker will start strong with great signal. Then the audio degrades but signal the same. I find if I 'key' quickly, the speaker comes back strong again but then fades again. My HAM study suggests that my radio does not have the features to 'track the fluxuating freq' OR I have a problem with capacitance and/or inductance somewhere. Surprisingly, the antenna tuned for 70cm and 2m works with an SWR of 1.2 on my GRMS tuned at a 462.575ish. I have swapped the coax cables back and forth (RG58 and RG213) as well with no change in fading. I this a product of my location and propagation problems due to my climate? Need some learnin', enlighten me oh wise HAM family.
  9. I have been surfing the net and have not found a download for programing software for these two machines (KPG 66D & KPG 91D). I am not looking for free stuff but would be nice. $100 for membership and etc seems a little more than I need. I have found a site selling but shows a picture of floppy drives. I havent had a machine with those in years. I'm not expecting free but downloadable from a creditable source. Any direction?
  10. how do you feel about the Btech UV-25X4?
  11. Finally! Checked in on a local net and got to talk to real humans!!!!! Totally stoked, rabbit hole, here I come!
  12. Noted, Sir. I think I will go with two radios with a price point that is palatable and play. Having said that, I will continue to actively work the bands with the HT on an aerial antenna. Thank you for your time again. I just didnt want to get a radio(s) that would be next to the treadmill and bread maker in the garage....
  13. My mistake, I am guilty of being vague. I am looking for a station which can reasonably handle all bands I have voice privileges on (6m and up). Agreed the spectrum scope seems helpful. I am initially interested in building antennas. The contact thing will be fun once I find folks on the air but I need to spend more time searching for traffic instead of just 'scanning'. I programed my HT with all local repeaters within 25 miles but only heard one organized net one time. I am investigating the local HAM clubs.
  14. I got my tech license recently and I am excited to get going. I have a HT and find it interesting but I am looking for a budget friendly base station for the general bands I am authorized to use. Budget friendly means under $800 for a radio that has room for me to grow and not limiting in a short time. Thank you in advance for your suggestions. P.S. I have Radioddity and BTech GMRS bases, Radioddity and Bufwang HT's. I am not brand loyal so.....
  15. Noted Sir and welcome! I'm reaching into building antennas....
