  1. Since I do not know, I'll ask, when you say "...minus the VHF Bands" are you saying the overall VHF bands or just the ability to transmit?  I thought the ability to get the NOAA stations would inherently make this a dual-band (VHF/UHF) radio except that either a hardware or software component has the transmit part locked down except for on the GMRS and FRS frequencies.

Not that it really matters, I think there are other aspects to this radio that matter more, like the ability to figure out the CTCSS codes and how to make those work for small group communication within the family. From what I see in the manual, that's not well covered.

The ability to TX sorry I didn't stated it clearly.

  2. Agree. $150-200 on the used market plus another $50-75 for a slug if its not in it already, but its really no different than a radio. You get what you pay for. I guess if your buying a $250.00 midland or baofeng a $75.00 meter is expensive but my APX8500 cost way to much to not use a quality meter...

Exactly! but to be fair it will be expensive for people to spend some extra $$$$ for a quality meter if they only use it setting up GMRS comm. To be honest I just recently bought a Daiwa SWR/Power meter just for GMRS use since I spent more time on HF I don't even have a antenna analyzer I just slap my newly built antenna into my AT2K.

  3. My mobile has a recommended input of 13.8 +/- 15% so it would be good up to 15.9v

    And as low as 11.73.

Just adding this for a reference.

This radio is 45w out (claimed) so I went with a 30amp power supply.

I would think 450w should be fine for most.

In the manual, the radio asked for less than 15a (207 watts?). I figured it would be safer to just double that.

The radio will only draw its rated amps so you have a very good head room there and of course higher amps power supply gives you flexibility.

  4. Very nice. GM300, are those hard to program, what do you use? I am mostly into XPR and EVX radios... most of the older stuff I haven't messed with it much... if at all.

    G.

I have two GP300 that I usually use I might add the XPR handies in my collection but I'm on the market for new HF radio so they have to wait. I also has TYT MD380 for DMR but I don't use it anymore I got iCOM F621TR in the truck very cheap since they're not as popular as the F221s and the F500s and of course the famous Baofengs......That's the thing with old school stuff they need old school hardware too some uses DOSBox but I prefer a real serial port.

  5. I'm brand new to ham and was looking at mobile VHF antennas.  I have a fender mount plate (NMO) and have really liked my Laird phantom "ghost" low (3.5") antenna in GMRS applications.  They make one in VHF at various frequency ranges.  My guess is that their 142-160 model would work fine for me, as I'm mainly interested in 146.520 for things like traveling, wilderness protocol, etc. and for the mid-150's to scan public safety, etc.

I've debated getting that vs. an antenna that goes 136-174, but, with SWR tuning, do you end up losing much of that range anyhow?

I have no problem with mobile antenna that has 136-174 range I encountered a few with 136-174 range that have been center tuned at 145.000 manufacturers do this for SWR purposes.

  6. Because of the burned paint I manufactured a steel mount to hold the magnetic mount off to the side of the hood.  BOLTED AND GROUNDED to the fender of the Jeep.  (I'd post a picture but don't know how)

I have held conversations up to 30 (-/+) miles on good days with repeaters and hand held GPX1000 out to 7 miles (me on a ridge and them inside a hotel room) within a straight line of sight.

I'm still puzzled it might be grounded that's why it burnt out your paint? About posting pictures have an account on photobucket.com upload your images and copy and paste the links.
