Very old thread but in case anyone else has this issue, I would suggest that you check to see if you have your antenna connected to the Tx/Rx connector and not the Rx connector, assuming you are using a duplexer.

HF is much more appealing than 2M or 70CM.

Do not use prolific cables. Use FTDI cables. Buy Two Radios sells what is called a XLT Painless Programming Cable. This cable is $17.99, it is ab FTDI and will work.

GMRS Nationwide This Zello channel has many repeaters linked to it from all over the country. Good bunch of folks and fun!

Silly question but have you checked if these repeaters are listed as Stale or Offline? Also, I agree with Randy about scanning for tones.

I know that this is an old thread but I have to ask why so many are posting that the Nagoya 701c is GMRS tuned when in fact the specs say that it is tuned to 455 MHZ (not 465 MHZ) on UHF?

If you can afford it, put up your own repeater and then maybe more people such as your friends would show an interest. This may sound expensive but you don't have to put up the world's most powerful repeater or even a commercially built one. There a many on eBay. Hi all. I am the CEO of Haven-Beat the Street, a non-profit organization in Atlantic City, NJ. We offer programs and services to the poor and homeless of South Jersey as well as assist those in need of rental assistance, addiction recovery and low income housing. I have am outreach team that goes into the community to engage and help anyone in need of assistance. My outreach team all have a GMRS license. There are many places throughout South Jersey that have no cell coverage but have line of site to GMRS repeaters. Also, I have purchased a repeater for use in Atlantic City that will also cover Brigantine, Ventnor, Margate and Longport, about a 15 mile radius. My problem is is after purchasing the repeater and antenna we don't have enough funds to purchase a few handhelds and the coax and antenna masts we need. Our donations have suffered during the pandemic and lock downs.
