You don't have to use a receive tone unless you're getting interference on the receive frequency. With it turned on you'll only hear the repeater that's transmitting that tone. and nothing else. If you're not getting any interference, simply turn off the receive tone function. You'll still hear the repeater, and any other radio traffic on that frequency.
