B tech GMRS 50V run as a base with Nagoya NMO200C & ground plane kit.. gets out pretty well I can hit 3 local repeaters on low power. Central Texas Got a couple HH that I use when mobile Love my radios!
We lived on a farm in western Nebraska, used the CH 14 walkie talkies alot for communication, as I grew up we would touch the antenna to the lightning rod on the barn, gave us a BIG antenna. we could talk for many miles. But nobody could get back to us except a few local truck drivers.
Ok, when listening to repeaters I have to push the MONI (monitor) button to hear people, but it gives me an ear full of static. Am I doing something wrong? I've tried adjusting squelch, doesn't help. I'm using it as a base, not mobile.
I'm on a linked repeater Roadkill, Ive talked coast to coast and northern Ohio from my little radio in central Texas.. A lot of fun.. If you can get on a linked repeater. I use two others that are not linked for more local talk.
If you can reach the repeater and know the CTSS number, put them in the radio and have fun. My BTech will find the CTSS numbers if the channel is busy. I'm quite active on the Roadkill network, reach coast to coast using linked repeaters.
just my $0.02 maybe the rain helped ground your mast? Or the wet ground acted as a ground plane? I have a chimney mounted Nagoya I had some welding cable I used for a ground, overkill but it's what I had.
Yeah I have a small CB in my Ranger, all I get its the illegal overpowered crap Its all over the band.. In in central TX and hear Florida, Detroit, somebody up in New England, a couple in Colorado all come in like they are next door. That's kinda why I went to GMRS
Its hard to cover all GMRS radios, but the terminology is not standard. in and out tones are a big one. And repeater offsets. not all GMRS radios call it the same. And maybe a word on "Chirp" I've had alot of issues with it.
