There is no proven reason to ground separate to the vehicle chassis vs. the battery ground. In fact, there are more reasons not to ground to chassis then to the battery ground. Especially in vehicles built today having various chassis insulators, protective sheet metal coatings and metals with poor conductivity. If you can provide an reasonably explanation from an engineering standpoint, you might have my ear..

Try installing a braided ground strap from your hood to the opposite chassis and even across your exhaust and the chassis. Use an inline noise filter, Kenwood and Icom make a nifty one and use ferret beads.. Make power connections directly to the battery with quality 10GA wire. both ground and positive. That should eliminate most all your noise problems. Ram Trucks are notorious for generating noise in Ham radios... I've applied everything i mentioned to friends with Rams and problems eliminated.

Pretty easy to mitigate if two radios have that problem. I had it with my KG1000 repeater and a simple piece if sheet metal cured it. I have two Maxon’s in an ammo Box serving as a portable repeater and no issues with desenses without adding shielding. I think if you use decent radio’s, you’ll be o.k.

Amazon and Ebay are loaded with HT repeater controllers, just make sure you get a controller that supports the two specific HT's you plan to use. Most Baufangs will be supported.. And you'll need a low power duplexer.. Probably not worth the trouble with HT's though. The same concept will work with most mobil transceivers and would be a better way to go. Some mobil transceivers, like the Wouxun KG-1000 and Maxon's won't need a controller as it is part of the radio but rather a jumper cable between the two.

I'd go with a home brew J-pole or Ed Fong's J-Pole.. I actually have both that i have used for my portable repeater and both are pretty impressive antennas.. Ed Fong is a bit more 'eye' pleasing.

Now here I sit happy as a go-lark with the 'first one' kicking myself i should've listened to Mama... The antenna that ships with your radio is going to do the best all around job.. unless you break the damn thing, leave it alone
