  1. John, When you say leave the radio in monitor - do you mean no PL tone ? I have a few channels that I have set up with the PL tone to open the repeater on the TX side and no PL tone on the RX side so I can hear everything said. When I don't want to listen to everything I switch back to the channel that has PL on TX and RX.
  2. My bad I was thinking of Interstate 70 - when you get off of it near Limon Colorado and take a dog leg down to Colorado Springs. Been a few years since I was driving round the country - I do remember that trip just typed the wrong Interstate number - sorry !
  3. I did not hear them this morning either - radio very quiet this morning. Dan
  4. Very disappointed in Wouxun - no response whatsoever - I will try and follow up with them - but I know I will not buying any more Wouxun's that's for sure. They might as well advertise a 10 year warranty - same difference if they are just going to ignore it.
  5. I heard those people talking this morning also, they had an awful strong signal, were somewhat careful and cryptic with regards to locations. I did hear the one unit say that he was by the entrance to Lebanon State Forrest, off of route 70, in South Jersey. He was on a mobile unit and was 31 miles from where I was hearing him clear as a bell on a hand held unit in a building. I do not think it was the Brick repeater as I was only receiving them with no PL code.
  6. Very helpful - thank you very much ! Dan
  7. What does the term ORI mean in the repeater database ? Thank you ! Dan
  8. Wouxun response tonight via e-mail : Dear Daniel, Nice day, We have forwarded the problem to our technician .If have any updated ,we will inform you ASAP. Sincerely, NaNa for Danny Chan
  9. William, Thank You - when I realized that the warranty topic might be long winded I did not want to hijack someone's thread. Dan
  10. Jeremy, I purchased a number of Wouxun radios in June. Mobiles and hand held units. T The unit I am having a problem with in one of the hand held units - model KG-UV6D V2. It has stopped transmitting audio from the internal microphone. It transmits a carrier signal just no audio. However, if I utilize an external microphone everything works fine. Doing some research on line I have found that this is a fairly common issue and is easily corrected, I may have to wind up getting this repaired locally, I have not made that decision yet. The unit is only about 8 weeks old, I am going to see what, if any response I get from Wouxun before I do anything else. I will keep you posted !
  11. I started a new thread - I did not want to hijack the previous thread - I copied and pasted the reply to my question. William - it seems as if I am going to have the same problem - at least your dealer is involved - I was told that my dealer is on vacation and given the wouxun e-mail address and told to contact them. I have e-mailed them and so far have not received a response - I will continue to try and contact them and see what happens. Thanks for sharing your experience. Dan
  12. Dan, I am in the process of dealing with Wouxun warranty service and the emails I sent to China have been a slow and long process.I finally got as rude as I could be to them to get any action.I told them when a product is under warranty at least in the US that it was a covered repair, they offered to sell me replacement parts and I said no and finally had to demand the send it to me at no charge. They agreed after months of hesitation and it is on the way with them footing the bill but I still say it is not what is wrong with my radio. I explained the problem with the control head I was having they stated one could be sent to me at shipping cost ,I said no.Then they told me after further investigation it was in the PCB and agreed to send it,I said why do you not send both,to me they were stalling and refused to send a replacement head.My problem is the head will scramble up the alpha display when in alpha mode with scan off and this is head number 2 in which my local dealer had swapped prior to this mess up. After the dealer taking my head and using it on his radio the same happened to him,so I got with my dealer and decided to email Wouxun for a answer which was a slow process and lots of aggravation. My dealer has the same problem with Wouxun as I do,they do not stand behind any warranty and expect the dealers to repair the radios at the dealers expense which I find unacceptable. This is my experience with Wouxun yours may be better but it looks like a cheap company who doesn't stand behind their product and they also begged me not to give them a bad reputation by word of mouth but I will not be given the run around...William
  13. I'm sorry - I do not think I suggested anything about a "call for torches and pitchforks" or anything like that. All I asked for is if someone who totally understood the issue could provide a simple - sample letter that could be copied and forwarded by people interested in opposing this proposal. A letter from me to the FCC saying hey this is a bad idea and I oppose it will not have nearly as much impact as a letter from me to the FCC with some basic facts as to why I would oppose it and how it will negatively affect my use of the licensed frequencies of GMRS. I am no expert - but from what I understand we only have eight (8) frequencies that we are allowed to use and if we are using a repeater there are eight (8) coordinating frequencies that are used for the repeater input. I am not trying to offend anyone - but quite honestly I do not need to understand the technicalities of the situation. I am an end user - I am not a hobby user - I purchased GMRS radios to provide communications on a large property where cell phone service is extremely poor. Additionally, in the event of a breakdown of commercial communications systems my family and extended family will be able to communicate. I want to ensure that a radio system I have and will continue to invest in will be available to operate in the best possible way as it was designed. If someone is proposing a change - I do not need to understand the details of a spectrum spread above and below the center frequency. I just need to know if it will negatively impact GMRS as we know it. If it does - a simple layman's terms explanation of how and why this change will negatively affect GMRS is what I would need to write to the FCC and my elected officials. When I write to a Federal agency about something I want or don't want done I copy my federal elected officials. Actually my Congressman told me to do this many years back. My letter to the FCC will be read by someone and my comments filed. When the Congressman sends a copy of my letter to the Chairman of the FCC with a cover note from the Congressman - someone a little higher in the food chain of the FCC is going to read the letter and take note of the opinion for or against a proposal, I am not delusional I do not think the Chairman of the FCC is going to read the letter. The Congressman will also appreciate it if the letter is in simple terms - such as this proposal will interfere with GMRS licensed communications on 2 of the 8 frequencies or on 25% of the frequencies allotted to GMRS use. Something he and his staff can understand. I am not asking for any more respect - less respect or for that mater any respect - I was just asking if there was someone who truly understood the issue and would be willing to draft a simple sample letter outlining the reasons we would be opposed to this proposal.
  14. So for those of us that have very little technical knowledge - if this is a bad thing for GMRS how about a member with more information and ability provide a sample letter that we could copy and send to the FCC or congressman or senators - any or all - whoever would be appropriate so we can try and prevent this? Just a thought Dan
  15. Logan, So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. I will keep him in my prayers today. Dan
  16. An additional question, are their specific ones that can operate 136-174 Mhz and 420-512 Mhz or can all of the KG-UV920P-A operate on those frequencies? The box label says 136-174 & 420-470Mhz. The dealer says disregard the label the radio works 136-174 & 420-520 Mhz Thanks for any information you can share
  17. Jeremy, What is the difference between the KG-UV920P and the KG-UV920P-A ? You made me check my order and the boxes only says KG-UV920P but the label says KG-UV920P-A. Dan
  18. speaking of antenna's I am having a problem finding a mobile antenna that covers both VHF (136-174) and UHF (420-520) I do not need the full UHF spread but seeing as I will primarily be using the GMRS UHF frequencies I would like something that covers them. Most dual band antennas I have seen cover the VHF and then usually stop in UHF at about 450Mhrz. suggestions - recommendations ? Thanks Dan - NJ
  19. Just wondering - what antenna did you use for the mobile install? My installer wants to use this antenna on my truck - http://www.tessco.com/products/displayProductInfo.do?sku=54982&eventPage=2 Dan
  20. I am very glad to hear that as I just received some along with the 6uvd hand helds - Waiting to install the mobiles next week - so far I am impressed with the hand held.
  21. So just curious ...how do you like the Wouxun kg-uv920P-A you are using as your mobile ? Dan
  22. I have a couple of CB radio's - really only used while on the beach. It's just one of those things - better to have and not need - than need and not have. It's a 2 edge sword - most concessional radio users will not spend the $85.00 for a GMRS license, and when they buy those bubble pack radios and they don't get any distance out of them - they give up. Thankfully ! Buy a Part 90 approved hand held radio - use it on GMRS and get several miles of clear communications. Every thing has it's own place. While I am on the east coast of the USA and there is cell phone coverage in most places, gas stations, 7-11's and drug dealers on almost ever corner - there are a lot of places in our country, especially out west, that you can go down a road many miles without any people or services. Colorado off of I-80 for example. When you take the dogleg into Colorado Springs off of I-80 there is a sign warning you there there are no services for the next 60 miles or so. Only way to communicate out there is by CB radio or a passing motorist. Same thing is southern Utah, the area off the grid - no electric - no cell phones - thank God for a good 2 way radio. So I am just saying CB radios and their big whip antennas serve a purpose in the correct area.
  23. I have to agree - Security is priority 1 !. In 36 years of law enforcement I've done my share of vetting people, and believe me we drilled down into some people's life - but with regards to giving out a repeater PL code - my vetting process is kinda plain and simple - if I wouldn't want you to be an overnight house guest - I don't want to listen to you on my repeater - has worked for me so far. When I want to chat with strangers there is always AOL or CB or the corner gas station or 7-11. Dan NJ
  24. Yes the "portable" I meant was the HT - we started calling them "portables" back in the 60's and never changed. Thanks for the information Dan
