A 10-watt device can operate between 10 to 15, while a 5-watt device typically runs from 5 to 10.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. The range  is not proportional to the power. The signal strength certainly improves with increased power, but terrain is usually the limiting factor at UHF, regardless of power. More power doesn’t make the signal follow the curvature of the earth and UHF stinks at skipping off the ionosphere. Once in a while the troposphere lends a hand though. 😉

The height of the transmission antennas also contributes to the signal quality.

I didn't say hello on the welcome board yet so... Hello from sunny yet frigid northern Wisconsin.  Not much for listed repeaters in my area.  Maybe I'll stick an antenna at the top of my 50-foot spruce.  :)

Looking forward to learning more about my weird obsession, as well as meeting some of you fine folks.

Finally received my GMRS license and now ready for the world of MyGMRS.com. I have been playing around with a few HT's and find it interesting and very different from the old CB's world. I'm hoping to learn more about GMRS all the while finding new ways to communicate with-in GMRS bandwidth. Hello to everyone.

Welcome.  And what activities do you and your friends or family do to need gmrs communication?  iE hunt, fish, hike, off road, go to the park (more FRS)…….  I’m always curious if people are using it for its purpose or just as ham lite.

Howdy from the Black Hills of South Dakota. Just picked up my first GMRS radios (TidRadio TD-H3) and trying to learn the ropes before installing a unit in the Tacoma. Staggering how many videos there are out there about GMRS, but very little in the way of "what to do to get going".

Looking forward to learning from the group.

Welcome from Montana!

Look for videos from Notarubicon. There are a lot and they cover nearly everything a person needs to know to get started.
Andd of course don’t be afraid to ask questions and try things!

I have seen quite a few "how to get started" and "GMRS for beginners" videos on Youtube.

Appreciate it and yes, there are some out there, just haven't devoted the time to watching them for more than a few minutes before life gets in the way.

Me too, but now that I’m not working uptown I don’t go there often. The owner of the M&M reopened in the building nearly next door. I think she has the same menu. I used to really enjoy the ground round cheese D with gravy on the fries.

OOPS!  I completely missed the welcome thread and just jumped right in.  Please forgive my fox paw😊.

I'm a retired water treatment consultant with too many hobbies so I need to add one more.  Radio wise, I started in the military, then used them in the ship building and oil industries.  Along the way I did the CB thing until it became populated with too many "individuals".

Outdoor wise, I've been a hunter/shooter and everything that goes with it since I was a kid in the fifties.  Got into off roading in the 80's when I bought my Jeep Scrambler.

That's enough stuff for now.
