Just resurrecting this old hobby after around 50 years of doing silly things like working and raising a family. Currently residing in Ypsilanti, MI and happy to report there is some activity here. Since I picked up a few radios it has been between 20 and 35°F and no fun being outside testing distance. Hopefully find an opportunity before too long. Having fun just catching up with the technology. Welcome to the forum! Quote

PhilFPA Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Thanks for the welcome! I was a "weather guesser" for 5 years in the Navy and was the only person both interested and qualified to use our radio. What we were required to know was simple "plug in cans to monitor weather band and also be able to find the teletype signal to pull down hard copy". When we were out in the middle of the Pacific, I would be kicked back and listening to whatever I could find from all over the world. The top of the mast was 206 feet above the water and depending upon the layers ("skip"), I could listen to whatever was out there. GMRS is my first license though and just the last few days have gotten me thinking about taking the Ham exam (another forum, I know). Again, thanks y'all for the welcome. Phil You won't find any "skip" in UHF/GMRS. It is pretty much line of sight. Many folks here are also licensed hams and there is a ham/amateur section on this MyGMRS forum that you might find interesting. There seems to be a lot of cross-over with us radio nerds.
