WRUU653 Posted yesterday at 04:24 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:24 PM 3 minutes ago, LeoG said: if you put your phone on airplane mode will the cell tower be able to ping your phone Yes, a cell tower can still ping a phone even when it's in airplane mode. Airplane mode primarily disables cellular radio for calls, texts, and data, but it doesn't stop the phone from periodically checking in with nearby networks. This "pinging" can still allow for tracking or monitoring. Here's why: Airplane mode is a phone setting, not a network setting: Airplane mode affects the phone's ability to communicate, but it doesn't prevent the network from detecting the phone. Periodic pings: Even in airplane mode, the phone may still periodically check in with cell towers to maintain its registration with the network. GPS and location services: Airplane mode doesn't turn off GPS, which can still be used for tracking. Therefore, while airplane mode can help prevent direct calls, texts, and data usage, it's not a foolproof method to avoid being tracked or monitored by networks. I think we can safely say it was a joke. SteveShannon 1 Quote
SteveShannon Posted yesterday at 04:36 PM Report Posted yesterday at 04:36 PM I don’t think people understand that the gps is just a receiver. Although it’s possible to see where a person has been if you have access to the phone’s data, the gps in your phone transmits nothing by itself. If you’re in airplane mode the phone does not “ping the towers” regardless of what ChatGPT says. WRUU653 and amaff 2 Quote

Googling this topic confirms that StingRay can't detect a pone f in Airplane mode or if phone is off. But it does mention there are malware apps if installed on a phone that can control a phone to make it 'look' like the phone is either off or in airplane mode. I don't think this tactic would pass the sniff test if cops deployed this. SteveShannon and WRUU653 2 Quote

Cops can use StingRays to also identify the activity around crime areas, i.e. a guy throwing rocks and bricks at law enforcement cruisers. How did they do this.. video surveillance (either private or public) provides a location, time, date, the crime and even video footage, in this case a masked person. Police match video evidence to that what StingRay provides , a date, time and exact coordinates of person committing a crime. Further investigation reveials who owns the phone creating all this criminal activity. Bingo,, Now the cops have somone they suspect and want to talk to.. Now this is a scenaro played out on X how they found the guy.. Here's the problem with that scenario. This is Los Angeles (I am a life long resident) where currently LAPD and most other police agencies no longer try to arrest criminals. There are lots of reasons why, but basically the citizens voted for this. So even if they can identify a criminal, unless it's a murder(and then it's iffy) the cops don't even bother to respond. I have noticed that LAPD and LA County Sheriff did a 180 take for whatever reason on enformcing the riots. They are actually arresting people like crazy right now.. More than likely becasue the cheif was getting heat for not standing up for hois men and women. Quote
WSHH887 Posted yesterday at 07:34 PM Report Posted yesterday at 07:34 PM The sheriff didn't do a 180. If they had been in charge from the start it would have been squashed quickly. Totally different mindset between LAPD and the L A County Sheriff. Quote

TrikeRadio Posted 19 hours ago Report Posted 19 hours ago So far I have not heard any chatter or activity over the past few days on any of the local repeaters or simplex. But the protests and rioting behavior has been pretty much just in a small few blocks in downtown LA, not all over the city and cities in the area so if there is any simplex traffic I am probably to far away to hear it anyway. I've known this for a least 3 years now and i did when i attended a confrence on voter fraud in Utah in 2023. I think you are giving too much credit to these "peaceful protesters" there in LA. Of course their phones are on. How else are they going to live stream their peaceful protest on Facebook or TikTok? I wouldn't be surprised if they were actually using the Zello app though. It was in heavy use during the Jan. 6 event in DC. After that, Zello removed the search option for finding channels. But if you know the channel name, or if someone is sharing the QR code there on the ground, it's easy for several thousands to be added to a channel. Quote

Apparently,, many 'smart' people in these riots committing crimes are being busted by their own phones Investigators are using StingRay and online videos to place criminals at a location then using that data to find, through cell records, who they are..
