I've been hoping someone would put a repeater up in Charleston...kinda surprised there are none in the area

I lived there for awhile. Married a local girl and still have family in the area. It is kind of amazing to me that there isn't one. There's a large HAM community and when Hugo and Matthew hit, they were instrumental in getting help where it was needed. GMRS just has never taken off in the area. My father in law's best friend is a HAM and has a whole outbuilding dedicated to it. He thinks GMRS is a "toy" so, there's that.

As far as I know, there are two possible but time is needed in getting material and testing completed.  People seem to be kinda harsh in these parts from with I have seen as of late.  Got to remember, these people are forking out their time and money.

I agree with UncleYoda, "I suggest you change the title to "Charleston SC repeater?""

I travel to Charleston a few times a year for work; probably my favorite location on the eastern seaboard. It is really surprising there are no repeaters there...most of the guys I know down there are the kind who would use them.

Here in the DC area we have a big selection of powerful repeaters. Of the two I frequent the most, one is 30 miles away, the other 52 miles. I can talk on either from a handheld inside my home. I scan everything and we have far more GMRS than HAM traffic.

I got my repeater up for under $1k .. Not the biggest/best in the area but it has about 900sq miles of coverage.

Your repeater works pretty decent.  I was hitting it pretty strong from 605 for a ways last month.

Helps that you're up on a small hill too.

By the time I get done with mine it'll be $7K not including my labor.

I've got a Hytera purchased from retired school district equipment on Ebay for cheap..  About a year ago their was tons of this on the market as schools and cities went digital.    In fact, one of them out of the two i purchased was brand new in the box..  My investment for the RightSide repeater including duplexer and antenna is less than 2K and right now if i sell the spare that i have i can actually make more on it than what i paid for both..  This repeater even has a controller built in..    In my mind, spending 7K for a repeater, with good equipment available on the used market is ludicrous.  But hey,,  each their own.

Did that include an 80 foot tower and concrete footing?  Along with the coax to reach the antenna on top, and the antenna?

I paid $1500 for my Btech RPT 50 which included the duplexer and can use any of the 8 pair whenever I feel like it.
