HHD1 Posted November 15, 2025 Posted November 15, 2025 Still on the map. Had one member respond to my request saying, "You can remove yourself from the map you know." I thought to myself, why yes. I do know. I just asked because I'm too lazy to do it myself. But my real response was, "How?" I haven't got an answer. Aaaaaaand, I'm still on the map. I did look for a way to self remove. There is nothing that I can see. How about you people? https://projectlonghaul.com/ JoelS 1 Quote
JoelS Posted November 17, 2025 Posted November 17, 2025 I saw that post, and your new update. I can't find a way to remove oneself either. There's a few aspects of the group that have gotten people confused over the last couple of months, some of which are just people not being familiar with Part 95 and what is and isn't allowed, but some of which are things that could be clarified a little better in a description. He's spelled things out in a few videos, but it seems like people are joining without actually understanding the group or its purpose, which would have been clear if they watched his videos. Also whenever you see several people posting the same question it's a sure sign that they just need stuff to be a little more spoonfed to them, because they haven't been able to find the answer on their own. Nothing against those people, it's just that not everyone is willing to dig for information. As far as removing yourself from the map I'm not seeing how to either, but I've never won any awards for my smarts. I don't want to remove myself though, to be clear. I think it's a neat idea that will get more people actually talking on GMRS, so I'm all for it whether or not it will actually accomplish anything. I just like that it promotes the hobby, and getting more people on GMRS is a good thing. CB used to be the gateway to amateur radio for a lot of people, but these days GMRS fits the role better. It's easy for someone to get discouraged about radio if they interact with some of the bad characters on 11m. GMRS is a lot more friendly and well mannered but there's not enough people using it. I'd love to see it become as active locally as CB used to be, but I know that's not going to happen. I do the call out like he instructs every chance I get during the scheduled times, but GMRS is fairly silent in my area. There's a guy on the map near me but not quite close enough. HHD1 1 Quote

Seems it would needlessly tie the limited channels we have up for people who are actually out using GMRS to do stuff other than talk on the radio. If you want to play radio, there's a whole space (several, even) for that. I mean, it's allowed on GMRS, it's not breaking any rules. But in more congested areas where all 8 high power channels are tied up with long winded rag chews about nothing, it starts really limiting how useful the service is for those of us actually using them to fill a comms need for other activities. Head to an OHV park or national park on a weekend if you want to hear 'more people talking on GMRS'. You'll have an ear full on every channel. Getting more people on for the sake of having more people talking isn't exactly something I'm looking for. WRUQ357, JoelS and HHD1 3 Quote

Amateur radio is definitely the preferable service to use just to talk on the radio, but my train of thought was that if more people use GMRS then more people will get into amateur as well. Quote

That certainly hasn't been the case in other hobbies I'm in. For most, the 'lower' tiers are their own end, and they find the people in the 'upper' tiers who treat theirs as a stepping stone or as a feeder "up the ladder" exhausting. In this case, I'm talking specifically about amateur motorsports, but I've caught whiffs of the same smell in the radio sphere. SteveShannon 1 Quote
HHD1 Posted November 17, 2025 Posted November 17, 2025 Well, I just got attacked on their Facebook group this morning. I made the comment, "What does it take to get removed from the map, a lawsuit?" The point being missed by a bunch of keyboard warriors sent them on the attack. lol Man did the uglys pop out. But that's a common Facebook thing in general. I tried to respond to a few of them, letting them know that it was a figure of speech, that I know my call sign is public info and that I was more concerned about the accuracy of their map and thought they would too. I only got more hate in response. So... whatever I guess. If you want to be part of a GMRS club or group, I recommend starting one between friends and family. Like the service was meant for. Now I have a decision to make, to talk about my "project" longhaul experience on our next live stream... Or let it go. hmmmm.... WRUU653, amaff, JoelS and 1 other 3 1 Quote

I think from a purely statistical perspective it is true that introducing people to GMRS (or any inexpensive recreational radio service) does lead to more people who eventually become more interested in radio technology and who then go on to become hams but it’s definitely not a given that anyone who uses GMRS will become a ham. WSJX263 Posted November 19, 2025 Posted November 19, 2025 I removed myself from this Project as state manager. As did another operator I know, who took my place after I removed myself. HHD1 Posted November 19, 2025 Posted November 19, 2025 This is my response to a private message I received from another member here: I joined up cuz I thought it sounded like fun. But I quickly saw how unorganized and sloppy it was. But hey, nobody's perfect. So, I stuck around. And I started seeing stuff that just seemed weird. Like asking for people to start new email accounts and sharing more information. Pictures of equipment. All tied to location markers. It made me feel a bit uneasy to say the least. But it was the constant promotion of his YouTube channel that really got me. Constant posting in the Facebook group of his new video uploads, even when they had nothing to do with the "project". And after watching a couple of his videos, something finally clicked for me. He's doing all of this for his own benefit. And that he just cares about his YouTube channel and image. Then all of the confusing parts about this whole thing became perfectly clear to me. Joe is envious of Randy and wants to be famous. He's a sad Ham with mental issues and this is his "grand idea" to become this image of greatness that he has stuck in his head. It's sad and creepy and I don't want my name or call sign associated with it anymore. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this with me. And the screen shots just confirmed what I already thought about the guy. I promise I won't throw you under the bus if I decide to publicly out this guy. If you have read all the posts in this thread, you'll see that I was skeptical to begin with. But I always try to give people the benefit of a doubt. Hoping that their intentions are innocent. Sadly though, most of the time, my instincts are correct. amaff, AdmiralCochrane, WSJX263 and 1 other 4 Quote

HHD1 Posted November 25, 2025 Posted November 25, 2025 Forget Project Longhaul I think this is a better use of time and resources. Do SHTF check ins with your family, friends and neighbors. And be on the lookout for someone in need. If this hasn't been posted on this forum yet, then it should have.
