WSEL330 Posted December 19, 2025 Posted December 19, 2025 Ok, Kids, I am struggling downloading WSJT for my windows 10 machine. Microsoft, in it's abundance of wisdom, have blocked the download siting virus found. HOW, in the name of HAM, do i get this onto my machine? I have played a little around with my settings of the security settings...to no avail. Mind you, I am not a HIGH level computer guy but I can navigate. Please hit me up for help and we can do a call or something. I never thought I would be interested in FT8 but here I am..... TrikeRadio 1 Quote

On the pop up that says Microsoft has blocked the download there should be something that says “Tell me more about this file” or something like that. I think it’s in the lower left of the box. Click there and tell it you want the file anyway. WRUU653 1 Quote
TNFrank Posted December 19, 2025 Posted December 19, 2025 I gave up on Windows in 2001. Had an iMac until 2012 until it died then got a couple used laptops and installed Ubuntu 1204 LTS and I've been running one version or another of GNU/Linux ever since. Quote

I run it on Ubuntu and it's working very well so far, especially on 60 meters at night! Quote

It's based on Debian so it's rock solid stable and MX has some pretty nice tools installed right out of the box. Quote

Frank is not the OP, who is asking a specific question about installing wsjt-x; he’s just commenting that he doesn’t like Windows. I have no doubt that Linux is a better experience for people who are sufficiently computer savvy to be frustrated by the very real limitations erected by MS, but the OP has asked for help with his Windows computer. Listing the advantages of a completely different OS probably isn’t the advice he needs at this point. WRYZ926, WSEL330 and WRUU653 3 Quote
TNFrank Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 From the title it sounds like he's ready for a new operating system. Quote
WRYZ926 Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 Let's stick to trying to help the OP with getting WSJT-X running on his Windows 10 computer. @WSEL330 what version of WSJT-X are you running and what are the exact issues? The reason I ask is I have seen a few people having issues with WSJT-X V3.0.0 and WSJT-X V3.0.0 Improved running correctly on Windows 10. They both work fine on Windows 11. The more information you can give us will make it easier for us to help. Quote

If I use the 'Having trouble downloading' link, it will start download but reports a 'virus' and not finish or left with a file I can not open. I tried screwing around with the security and malware settings but can't pull this off. I am sure it is an issue with the user but can't connect the dots. I am running windows 10 at the moment. I have zero interest in changing operating systems. I was hoping for a simple download and goof off with FT8 (after setting up) on my FTX-1... Quote

I think I can help you download and install wsjt-x. I have it running on my W10 machine. The program I have (Remote Incident Management) will require you to download and install it. We both will run it simultaneously and I can talk to you on the phone as I do the work. You’ll be able to see everything I do. I cannot get into your computer without you giving me access but I understand if you don’t want to do that. WRYZ926 1 Quote
warthog74 Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 Have you tried using a different web browser (like firefox, chrome, pale moon, waterfox, brave, etc) other than what you are currently using that’s failing to download the file? A stock browser with no add-ons or extensions installed should download it just fine. SteveShannon, WRYZ926 and TNFrank 3 Quote
WRYZ926 Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 I have had similar issues the trying to use the Microsoft Edge browser. I have not had that happen when using Firefox on Windows 10/11. Check your browser settings and see if there is a setting for allowing downloads from specific websites. Are you using Windows defender or a third party anti-virus program. I have way less trouble with Windows Defender compared to third party antivirus programs. SteveShannon 1 Quote

It turns out that a windows firewall was the problem (operator error). I got it loaded and to figure out this FT8 thing. Ill let ya know. SteveShannon and WRYZ926 2 Quote
WRYZ926 Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 Glad to hear that you figured it out. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to setup and run WSJT-X along with getting different radios working with it. Quote

WRYZ926 Posted December 20, 2025 Posted December 20, 2025 I enjoy using my 20 watt G90 for POTA. It does quite well when using resonant antennas. SteveShannon 1 Quote

That is exactly the machine I have! I love it for that. I run a random wire, 41' with (4) 17' radials. It has a 9:1 unun, end feed downward sloping. I am pushing 20 Watts with a headset. The mast is a 30' fiberglass thingy. Set up is 20 minutes if I am on old man time, which is frequent, lol. 10 minutes if I'm on a mission with activation, propagation dependent, with in 30 minutes. I'm looking to get my Yaesu FTX-1 optima out there and see how that goes. It is a little heavier BUT 100W for the 8lb package... SteveShannon 1 Quote
WRYZ926 Posted December 21, 2025 Posted December 21, 2025 I've been using my REZ Antennas Recon 40 vertical whip antenna with 24 8.5 ft ground radials. I have to adjust the whip for each band but it is resonant and I do not have to use the G90 tuner. I have have made more contacts with the G90 and Recon 40 that guys using 100 watt radios and antennas that require an external tuner. SteveShannon 1 Quote
