Question

Hello everyone

My first post on this forum. I am a total newbie but trying to learn. I am trying to reach a repeater in my area.  The frequency is 462.650 MHz and based upon my understanding that is a pre-programmed repeater channel on the radio. Is this correct? The input and output tones are showing as “074 DPL”. I have gone to menu 11&13 to set these tones and the options are 74.4 Hz so I am assuming this is the setting? I have also set to 74 and have not had any success. I am not able to enter 074 as it defaults to 74. Since I am not getting any noise, I am assuming that I am not hitting the repeater.

This is my first attempt at trying to reach a repeater so please forgive my ignorance. I have been watching videos and reading all I can, but I am obviously doing something incorrect.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you so much for the reply. So, should I set menu’s 11&13 back to the default? Would you by chance know the menu # for the DCS digital code? Also, I am really stuck on how to set the outbound/transmit. I see no where to do this.

Thank you again

Ok. I figured out the DCS digital code and that has been set. I am now just stuck on the outbound/transmit setting. I am not sure where to locate that setting.

I've never heard it put quite like @docholliday666 put it.
But if you're on a GMRS radio, on 1 of the baked-in repeater channels, your transmit offset frequency should be pre-set. Push the PTT. If the frequency on the screen changes from 462.650 to 467.650, you're good. If it doesn't, you're probably not actually on one of the repeater channels.

It's been a minute since I had that radio. If you're using the included settings, be sure you're on the repeater channels that match the freq. Otherwise, if you're programming it yourself, I think it's like 23 or 24, frequency offset and direction. The Direction is Plus and the offset should be 5.00Mhz.

Personally, I'd always blow away default settings and set things the way I like. The benefit of doing this is that you understand how each setting works instead of assuming that it came set correctly. The hard part is always muddling through the fine details and "by design" bugs that you find.

None of my H3s were preprogrammed with tones.  I have plenty of them.  I have had several of them show up without transmit power.  They could still transmit to the other pair to about 1000 ft but couldn't reach any repeaters.  So that's always a chance.

The other thing might be wrong tone or code.  Or correct Tx code but wrong Rx code blocking the radios response to the repeater.  If you enter the Rx code it will automatically set the Tx code the same.  If you program the Tx code the Rx code won't be set.  Just something you should know.
