450~512 MHz or 400~470 MHz - Which one do I want ???

Looking at the Kenwood TK-8180H radio.

It lists:

• Frequency Range Type 1 - 450~512 MHz
• Frequency Range Type 2 - 400~470 MHz

Which one would I want/need for full GMRS access and repeaters?

I recommend 400-470 if you think you'll eventually get your Ham license or would like to monitor Ham.

 

If not then 450-512 is fine, but I've never had a need to go past 467.

 

They both work the same for GMRS since GMRS is just 462-467.

Thank you so much - There is a guy selling new Kenwood TK-8180H Frequency Range Type 2 - 400~470 MHz for a decent price with Laird NMO mount and some weird antenna for what seems to be a very fair price.

even if you go w/range 1 the vco can be adjusted to go into 70cm ham.

my 880's and 8180's have both T-band and ham in them 440 - 482.

While they will both TECHNICALLY work in the GMRS band, I believe the type 1 is Part-95 certified for use on GMRS, but the type 2 is not.

Check the FCC ID numbers of both.
